So basically my fucking turbine housing likes to eat the threads off bolts. Today the threads were stronger than the shaft that goes to the bolt head so the bolt head broke off. This sucks. I think I need to retap the threads but first this crap.

Anyway, it was broken off too short to notch it and screw it out so I drilled it out a couple of times and tried to screw it out with various sizes of hex wrenches hammered into the bolt. None of it worked.

Now I am at the point where I have drilled out 7/32nds (3.5/16ths) of a 5/16th size bolt. My drilling was a bit off center so I am at the threads on one side of the inside.

Advice to proceed?
1) I could just keep drilling, hope for the best (best not likely)
2) I could just say fuck it, drill it out to 1/2 inch and put a 5/16th steel nutsert in it. Or a helicoil, not that I know where to get those around here.
3) Something smart instead? Please share.

Just keep drilling until the bold disintegrates then pry out all the little pieces of left over metal. Retap and you aregood to go.

It works like a charm.

Drill it all out including the threads. Drill it up to the next helicoil size. Helicoil all 4 turbine threads so that this never happens again.

4 threads? I have a mercedes 5 bolt.

Also, where do I buy helicoils? It took me 2 days to find something as simple as nutserts. I understand what they do but I have never used them.

Also, the drilling idea will work even though I am off center? Or it just wont matter once I take the bolt pieces out and drill the hole out anyway.

You need to go to a good machine shop and/or mcmastercarr I believe sells them. Making reliable tapped threads by hand in cast iron is impossible, I've tried. You can get good enough threads for a helicoil to grab but if you make a thread and put a bolt in a tapped thread it will most likely lock next time you go to remove it. You need rolled internal threads and even then, as you've found, they still weld to the bolt with the heat. Stainless steel helicoils don't react with the bolt to weld to it. Same with exhaust manifold studs, I helicoil all mine.

Its little things like that that make it possible for me to lift the head on my DSM in an hour. Meaning I can do a headgasket repair in about 2.5 hours. A turbo swap would be about an hour. Life is nice when your not fighting with dirty cars and frozen bolts all the damm time.

Thanks, I didn't realize that heli-coil could fix this faggotry or I would have done it already.

Wait, are all helicoils stainless or do you have to order them specially?

I've decided that from now on when I have a broken off bolt in a part that I can pick up, I'm taking it to the machine shop without even trying to drill it out myself. The old guy only charges like $5 for something like that, and he doesn't fuck things up like I tend to do.

Yes, machine shop for the win.

If you drill out the center of the bolt, drop a 1/8 or 3/32 nickel or mild rod down there, then hit the pedal for a second to fuse the end of the rod to the stuck bolt. Let it cool COMPLETELY. Twist out. Easy. ;-)

You just have to have a TIG.

Ian

PS: always use anti seize on turbine housings.

Well I've already fucked that up. I'm just going to wait for the helicoil to get here and then I'll redo all 5 holes.

And euphoric, it eats the threads because the heat welds the threads from the bolt and the housing together. They detach when you remove the bolt.

Any auto parts store should have Helicoil kits, with the tap and install tool you need.

Well atleast all the parts stores around here do.

I take it to my "guy" when I fuck up bolts. Fuck re-threading. Fuck tapping.

Well I can't put bolts into the turbine housing anymore because they are full of old thread material. If helicoil fixes this, I will be a happy man.

We had a problem on the rally car, stainless nuts on the exhaust studs. Apparently there was something (maybe nickel content?) in the nuts that came out with heat and welded them to either the manifold or the studs. Those were a bitch to get off. I don't recall what's on there now? Brass or something perhaps? I seem to recall my exhaust nuts for the downpipe being brass or similar in color.

Hmm, problem bolt is gone and the hole is drilled out and helicoiled.

Only problem is that I slightly misjudged and didn't tap deep enough and I can only use a 3/4" long bolt instead of a 1" now. But the helicoil went all the way in and bolts slide in nice and smooth until they hit the taper. This is way better than no bolt and better still than a snapped off bolt.

It is also pretty cool how home depot will let you bring back drill bits each time you snap one.

My current garage sucks. I need a workbench again. Turning the tap thing is a supreme upper body workout when you don't have a vice.

4 more to go.
