I've heard a lot of people say that once they've trained themselves to use back focusing, going back to the half depressed shutter button feels archaic.
Is there a reason why I'd choose to back focus, instead of using metering + focus with the shutter button?
I realize it depends on the type of pics you take, but I'm just trying to figure out under what circumstances I might improve my keep rate compared to what I'm doing now.

It has its place, but I use the shutter button. If you're doing something that doesn't require refocus for every shot it's pretty handy.

Do you mean focusing using the LCD screen? I've always known back-focusing as when the lens is off at a certain focal length or when the focal plane is knocked off when while zooming.
I was using your old XS last night for shits and giggles and it's not too bad with custom white balance (and a very fast lens, lol).
No, using the AF-On button (At least on the 60D) on the back of the camera instead of a half press of the shutter.

I use it, when I try to use a camera with shutter release triggered focusing, it does feel weird, hehe. I've got the body set for continuous focus, so as long as I hold that button down it's focusing. When I let go, focus is locked whether I press the shutter halfway or all the way or whatever. I tried it as a test for a weekend and totally fell for it. Can't go back now.
