time to take the f4 out for a spin
guarantee you if you did that with film, it'll be a LONG time before you make that mistake again.

It just occured to me last night that I really need to quit sharpening the whole image and restrict myself to the plane of focus, but I did the sequence before that (the top pic was done afterwards). , scott
THAT'S what it is! You sharpen for the main subject and let the fine details (leaves, grass, etc) get way too "crispy" IMO.
I know you hate layer masks, but give this a shot:
Select your base layer and hit CTRL + J to duplicate it. Sharpen the newly duplicated top layer as you normally would. Hit Option + layer mask button to create an all black layer mask Use the brush tool on white to paint back in the sharpened bits where you want it.
(you can also create a 'normal' all white layer mask and just paint in black where you don't want the sharpening to apply)
As far as color saturation goes, here's a quick thing I do sometimes to mute my colors (if that's what you're looking for).
Create a new adjustment layer black and white above your base layer, then drop the opacity real low so it just takes the edge off. You can also play with the adjustments within this 'black and white' adjustment layer as well as the different blending modes. This is a tip I picked up in one of the Joey L videos that makes for some really interesting stuff.

If you use lightroom you can paint in the sharpening.

I do still run into this issue of checking setting from time to time. I get almost everything correct but then I will notice I am on shutter priority or that I have my ISO too low for indoor ambient lighting.
It is always very easy to pick out what I did wrong after the fact but it is the art of slowing down that I can't seem to do.
Now I know why McNally and Maisel have their assistants do all their post. , scott
I often wonder what Eric could do to some of my shots. I am still the suck with lightroom and have been able to resist the desire to purchase CS4.

This is one reason why I always leave my camera in "P".
And you oversharpened the shit out of those photos...I started to look at it crosseyed hoping it was one of those hidden photos.

That kind of defeats the purpose. I'm not trying to record, I'm trying to create.

Yeah, fucked it all up. Next time I'll do better.
cheers, scott

What software are you using to selectively sharpen the image?
The layer mask discussion makes me think it is photoshop versus lightroom.

That kind of defeats the purpose. I'm not trying to record, I'm trying to create. Then you should be smart enough to make sure you're using the proper settings before you "create"...
There are times when getting "that" shot is needed and I don't have time to fumble with the settings. So before I put my camera away, I always put my settings back to: Program mode Matrix meter ISO 400 AutoWB Single Focus Center focal point
