... over idiotic mistakes I shouldn't make.

Don't get so caught up in a situation that you don't notice that you are shooting at completely the wrong speed and aperture for the situation.

I came across a couple of elk this morning, one of which I've shot before, and he and his buddy started play fighting for my benefit (or to help dislodge their antlers which they should have shed already, but I like to think it was for me). I grabbed my D300, jumped out of the van and started shooting. I didn't bother to check my aperture nor remember that I had been shooting buffalo 15 minutes earlier where I wanted a deep depth of field.

So what did I get? A bunch of 250 to 400mm shots at f/13 and 1/50th to 1/100th of a second. Good opportunity thrown away in a moment of moronic carelessness.

This one is less blurry than most...

... but their faces are behind the feeder.

Maybe I'll just live in auto ISO from now on. I wonder how bad the D300's images look at 1600?

time to take the f4 out for a spin

guarantee you if you did that with film, it'll be a LONG time before you make that mistake again.

I've been shooting this herd of elk frequently for the last 3 months and off and on for the last year and this was the first fighting - even if only play fighting - that I've come across. I'm kicking myself hard.

On the other hand, I did manage to catch a sequence of a pregnant cow going all Art Vanderlay on an asshole in a Cavalier...

Here she is walking along, minding her own business:

Then the stupid comment during the drive by:

Aww hell no:

I wish a motherfucker would come back...

It was damn funny and all the people behind the crappyleer rolled their windows up and tried not to make eye contact.

Would you mind sharing your post processing workflow, Scott? I'm interested in an excruciating detailed step by step if you're willing to post it up.

Is it the shade of green or the awkwardness of the oof areas you don't like?

It just occured to me last night that I really need to quit sharpening the whole image and restrict myself to the plane of focus, but I did the sequence before that (the top pic was done afterwards).

The green is a side effect of using adobeRGB I think. Looks kinda too saturated on my monitor, but it prints ok.

I know. And it's going to be so damn time consuming to fix, but probably worth it - the 80-400 has decent bokeh when I don't screw it up.

THAT'S what it is! You sharpen for the main subject and let the fine details (leaves, grass, etc) get way too "crispy" IMO.

I know you hate layer masks, but give this a shot:

Select your base layer and hit CTRL + J to duplicate it.
Sharpen the newly duplicated top layer as you normally would.
Hit Option + layer mask button to create an all black layer mask
Use the brush tool on white to paint back in the sharpened bits where you want it.

(you can also create a 'normal' all white layer mask and just paint in black where you don't want the sharpening to apply)

As far as color saturation goes, here's a quick thing I do sometimes to mute my colors (if that's what you're looking for).

Create a new adjustment layer black and white above your base layer, then drop the opacity real low so it just takes the edge off. You can also play with the adjustments within this 'black and white' adjustment layer as well as the different blending modes. This is a tip I picked up in one of the Joey L videos that makes for some really interesting stuff.

If you use lightroom you can paint in the sharpening.

That's a viable option, but I much prefer doing this in CS4. The past couple weeks I've actually started doing much more in Photoshop and almost nothing in LR2. Used to be the exact opposite.

I do still run into this issue of checking setting from time to time. I get almost everything correct but then I will notice I am on shutter priority or that I have my ISO too low for indoor ambient lighting.

It is always very easy to pick out what I did wrong after the fact but it is the art of slowing down that I can't seem to do.

I often wonder what Eric could do to some of my shots. I am still the suck with lightroom and have been able to resist the desire to purchase CS4.

Photoshop is definitely something you have to want to learn. I avoided it completely for awhile before forcing myself to learn some of the most basic options. Now it's something where I really want to learn all the ins and outs of the program. It's also become much more fun in the past month or two since buying on of these:

http://www.wacom.com/intuos/

Shawn...now you can start worrying about resisting the temptation of CS5! It's definitely a big expense up front though. Student discounts are very nice in this sense

I guess I'll be buying CS5 and a tablet with my tax return instead of light shapers. I need to build some fucking skills. \:\(

The advice given to me by another photographer was: get a small. I bought a small and I'm happy with the decision.

The larger sizes will just have you working your arm all over the freaking place. I've never felt like I was constrained by the small. I think a larger tablet would be ideal if you were doing lots of painting/drawing, but it would seem that smaller is better for most photo editing.

I tried, I really did. It just didn't make any sense to me. Why struggle to figure out what's going to be masked and what's not and why when I could just use the little selection tool to limit my sharpening to the animals and then inverse selection to adjust the brightness of the rest of the image.

sorry,
scott

I really wish I could be sitting next you as you mess with this stuff Scott. Layer masking is 19350235x easier/faster/more flexible than messing around with selections.

How are you going about using the layer masks for sharpening?

EDIT: regardless of the how I think the picture above looks good and much more natural to my eye. Not sharpening the out of focus areas and oversharpening the grass detail makes a big difference.

This is one reason why I always leave my camera in "P".

And you oversharpened the shit out of those photos...I started to look at it crosseyed hoping it was one of those hidden photos.

Depth is a good thing man. Try this selective sharpening with all your stuff and you'll get used to it. Looks worlds better.

That kind of defeats the purpose. I'm not trying to record, I'm trying to create.

I spent hours last night (technically this morning) trying to use layer masks for sharpening with meh results.

What software are you using to selectively sharpen the image?

The layer mask discussion makes me think it is photoshop versus lightroom.

CS3 I briefly had LR3 beta, but I didn't like it. I also tried Phase 1 Capture 1, but again, I didn't care for it.

It should work fine in elements. What I've been doing has been to select the bits I want sharpened with the magic wand tool and then doing unsharp mask which works only on the selection. I've played with it a little in a few shots by doing an inverse selection afterwards and adding a .5 to .7 pixel or so gaussian blur to the not-sharpened areas and I've also played around with dropping the brightness of the not-sharpened areas by about 5 to 8 whatever units they are. I'm sure in a month I'll look back and facepalm on how heavy handed I'm being now like I am now when I think about sharpening the entire image like I was up until two days ago.

*EDIT* This one has all three of those things done to it...

cheers,
scott

Then you should be smart enough to make sure you're using the proper settings before you "create"... ;\)

There are times when getting "that" shot is needed and I don't have time to fumble with the settings. So before I put my camera away, I always put my settings back to:
Program mode
Matrix meter
ISO 400
AutoWB
Single Focus
Center focal point
