i have $200 burning a hole in my pocket and have a D40 with a kit lens. I find myself and my wife mostly shooting pics of people at parties, friends, kids, our dogs, ect. I would love something to shoot in a little lower light and the 35mm seems to get great reviews and is fairly cheap. Im also headed out on a cruise in May and would love a new toy to take along. would this fit the bill for that type of situation as well? if not, what would you suggest? please nothing outrageous in price and it has to work with the D40 AF. Thanks

50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8

A fast 50 should be in everyones bag. I'm not sure how a/f will work on the 40 though.

i think the only 50 that will AF with the D40 is the 1.4 and thats almost $500. i know its much better but double the budget is tough right now \:\)

It's just slightly bigger than a 50mm would be on a 35mm camera - it's a classic focal length that is supposed to be roughly the same as the human eye. I have no use for it, but it's got a history of massive popularity.

50mm on a FF cam is a good length IMO, 35mm is close enough on a crop sensor. Rarely is a fast, sharp prime the wrong thing, especially when it's that cheap. You buy nao.

EDIT: What else is in your bag?

All that's in my bag is the 18-55 kit lense but is to slow for indoor stuff. I hate the stock flash indoors. I like to just snap away

I just added an old school nikon 50mm 1.4 to my bag cost me like $65 shipped (and another $12 for a canon adapter).

Who needs auto focus anyway? Old school, its where its at.

I also got a nikon mount vivitar 70-210 3.5 macro the other day. Constant aperture zoom FTMFW!!! (was abotu the same price $55 or so)

I will concur that the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 is a very awesome and versatile lens, but id still keep a really fast lens around for low light.

Fast sharp primes are hot. Check it out, sell it if you don't like it. I'm personally selling my zooms to go with fast primes, also going FF.

get the 35 or the 17-50 2.8 tamron
I got myself a sigma 18-50 2.8 but the tamron was a close second.
You could also rent a lens for your trip but get the damn insurance!

Don't forget the D40 requires the internal AF motor in the lens, Alex.

regardless of my hate for the fiddy on crop, a short-ish prime in the 1's (f/1.8 in this case) is always a good thing to have. It may not look like too much, but there's a pretty big difference between that and 2.8...way more if you're going up to/beyond 4 for your next fastest lens.

I love my 50mm on my crop sensor but that is me. I can't think of any reason not to buy this lens for 200 dollars, I guess the only knock would be if you were considering moving up to FX any time soon.

It was on my list this spring but then I decided to not cover my entire midrange with primes(24,35, and 50) and bought the 24-70 f/2.8 bunch of awesome. I pretty much figured out that I would be going to FX at some point and the 24-70 was so tempting.
