Can you control power output and everything from the 580 commander then? what about placing flashes in groups and controlling them that way?
I've always heard about the unquestioned superiority of Nikon's CLS system, but I don't know what Canon offers so I don't know how true that statement is.

yeah, you can group up to three distinct sets I believe and set ratios or specify exact values I think... I have not played much with them so I can't say 100%.
