Any pointers? This will be my first time doing this so should be fun assuming i can get my ass out of bed in time.

Plan on shooting with D90 and Tokina 12-24mm lens mounted to tripod.

Usually posting questions about how to shoot sunrise 5 hours before you go is pretty risky

You can post up your results and ask questions still

Lol, yea, I had quite a few ideas put together but figured I'd ask and see if there was anything else to try. Unfortunately, weather was shitty and I didn't make it out. =(

Best thing is to just go out and do it and see how it turns out. You can expose for the sky, in which case you'll be able to see it, or you can expose for the foreground/stuff around you, and you won't see the sky, because it'll be blown out.

Or you can HDR it.

Or you can do both.

Just take a few shots with exposure for the sky, then take your foreground shots.

Then hit the sun a few times as it comes up, layer it all with the exposure areas that you like(not hdr), clean up and presto.

(works great for sunset, dust and post sundown shots as well)

So I ended up getting up this morning and getting quite a few shots. Here is one that I liked a lot:

I know the sun is blown out extremely bad but I'm not sure how to fix it. I did minor adjustments in Lightroom and haven't touched it in Photoshop yet as I don't know what I'm doing :\.

Thoughts on this picture? I plan on posting some of the others up over the next day or so as well. This was my first time shooting a sunrise and overall, I was pleased with it.

Looks very good. The Sun will ALWAYS blow out, it's the Sun - that's what it does. Don't lose any sleep over that.

Maybe you could crop the bottom a little bit or the top, just to get the horizon further from the center-line of the frame (and level the horizon - it's so close that it won't crop much, but it'll do wonders for the pic).

There's probably some more orange to be had by upping the contrast, but do it with caution, it's easy to go too far.

cheers,
scott

That's a mighty fine picture taken, if you ask me.

Good job!

f/2.8, huh. Interesting.

Thanks guys, I took alot of shots at f/22 and then starting adjusting from there.

Scooter, you wanted more orange, here is that same picture with no WB adjustment:

I think you made the right call. I dig the increased orange, but your sky and water look better in the first pic. This is where Eric would put the two different WB versions together in a composite to get the best of both worlds, but my skills are way shy of doing that myself.

cheers,
scott

It's as easy as pie. One of these days I'm going to do up a little tutorial on basic layer masking.

Great sunrise shot! Am I alone in liking the look of blue skies when warmed up? They almost become bluish gray, but I like it for some reason

tutorial posts would be a great addition to the forum, do it!

I like the uncorrected pier photo best, that warm orange color looks great.

So, I want to post some more of my shots to see what you guys think, but I'm thinking about using one for the contest. Would it be wise for me to wait or just say eff it?

Posting it can only be beneficial IMO.

sounds good to me \:\)

1/6"-F/22-ISO 200 @ 24mm

I need to load CS4 and remove the dude at the upper left and kayakers, lol. I also need to remove the dust spot at the top of the picture as well.

Here is the same picture cropped. I'm not sure which I like best.

What are you guy's thoughts?

I'll be posting more over the next couple days.
