I've got a stick up my ass to spend money. Part of the problem is a whole thing with the joy of spending money and getting new toys. That's a whole thing on it's own. I've had my eyes on an xpro1 for a long time. The Df had me excited but it's way more money then I wanted to spend on it. So then the xpro1 starts looking pretty good again.

Then a dickhead friend of mine suggests that my shooting style could actually be supported by the Fuji. I start totaling up stuff to sell, the d700, the 85 1.8, 20 2.8, the $100 macro zoom, sb600....maybe the 70-200. I do LOVE that lens though, and there's no direct equal for the Fuji....so I still have access to a d300s and a d600 so I could keep the 70-200 for races. I think the rest of the stuff, realistically I could get about $3500 for it. Even have the V1 and the F adapter for that that I could unload. Could also sell the 70-200 and rent it for $60 for a weekend 4 or 5 times a year and pick up another 2 lenses for the Fuji, or another Einstein and Vagabond.

That turns into an xpro1, a 60mm macro, a 23 1.4 and the 55-200. Pretty solid kit there for what I shoot, throw in the d600 with the 70-200 on it here and there. Even the Zeiss glass is on sale right now for the Fuji.

Finally I mostly talk myself out of that move, but it's tough. Then I sorta get interested in the Sigma 35 1.4. It's an incredible piece, and dickhead friend uses one all the time, it would work nicely for me. I have a 35 2.8 I use on my F2 and I like the field of view quite a bit. $760ish from Amazon Warehouse. Going back to El Mirage this weekend...that'd be nice while hanging with friends in the pits. I either have the 20, or the 50, or the 70-200, I'm not wild about the 50 field of view, a little too tight, the 20 is way too wide.

BUT THEN! If I were to dump all my primes I could just get the 24-70 and have my two pieces of glass and pretty much be good. As it is now, I carry a shit load of glass and it sucks. I don't enjoy carrying two bodies and 3 or 4 lenses and having to swap while walking a race or event. The a7 looks pretty sick too, being full frame, but I'm not so thrilled with glass selection. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Hopefully I can delay long enough to get over it and just focus on getting some paying work.

I know, will it make my work better? Will it fulfill a need? Or a want? It's a want, buuuut, so what? I could do my work with the Fuji, some of it might be harder, but I've got a sick kit already, why do I keep wanting to fuck with what works? Except for the 35 or 24-70...that's just making it work better :p

good ol gas.

i want to switch entirely to mirrorless and all. but the main thing is the AF isn't as responsive as it needs to be just yet. i did dwindle 6 lenses down to 2, so that's much more convenient. also picked up a cheap EOS M* for putzing around.

i've realized that gear is gear. i'll buy and sell stuff just like that w/o any real attachment to it, and before it loses too much value. hoarding will just bog you down and you miss the shot.

*thought about getting "EOS M" tags for my ///M

Mostly it's growing up without disposable income, and now i've got a good job and play with high technology all day and enjoy gadgets and have some money.

I was thinking about renting a fuji kit for a weekend, be ~$150 or so. Or, buy from Amazon and do a month test. Samy's (local) has a 200 actuation limit. If I buy, I'd prefer to buy from them, but I really want some time with it to make sure it's going to work before I commit. I had an x100 for a month or two last year, when the V1 went on super sale I sold the x100 and got the V1 and FT1 adapter. Iwanted something I could carry around that was a little smaller. But, then I found out how crop factor actually works and I don't even know where I've got the adapter stashed right now. I need to dig it out and sell it no matter what I end up doing. Anyways, I had a Fuji for a little bit, my Nikon's are super dialed in and an extension of my hands at this point, so any shift is going to be, weird...and any focus lag when I'm shooting bikes could be frustrating, but I don't want to exactly specialize in shooting races, and if I do, I want to be paid for it and on a moto matching speed. Or run a D4. Or something.

:sigh: ya

knock it off, focus on getting paid work, let that drive purchases. I have a big project I want to wrap up the year with to help round out my portfolio. That's frustrating though too because any of those options would be fun to use with the project :P I feel like I need to do either the sigma or the 24-70. Probably the sigma 35 since it's the cheapest

I would expect so. From what I understand though, it's unacceptable to markup your rental. Everything is supposed to be passed through, which is absolutely ridiculous. Especially if you're carrying that payment over 30, 60, 90 days until your paid. Where I work, we rent a/v gear for high end commercial systems. Everything is marked up. Sub rentals, travel, labor. It takes time to arrange all of that.

I know those feels. 100% hobbyist besides some architectural stuff for realtors.

Finally saved up enough $$$ to buy a very fast UWA prime, and can't do it.

Thinking about selling some redundant lenses to fund a larger investment, but I think I get as much fun out of having an arsenal of lenses as I do using them. Cleaned up the 70-200 f/4 to list on a local forum last night and decided to just put it back in the cabinet. It hasn't been mounted on a camera body in years, but idunno. Seems like I might regret it when a rebel in a few years will be able to do native ISO-12800+ standing on its head...

Then there's the idea of buying a FF Nikon body or a Fuji type mirrorless setup floating around in my head.

Going to just keep letting the camera gear fund accumulate until I can decide on something. As much fun as a 6th DSLR body would be...

The locking lever on my freaking Manfrotto 498RC2 ball head broke the other day - last thing I needed, especially as I was considering CF legs. I never even used the lever, just the tension knob... I doubt I used the head for 24 hours in total and sure as shit didn't drop or abuse it.

Then that damned Nikon Df had to come out with a D4 sensor.

That sucks about the ball head lever, damn. Awhile back I bought an Induro, and stuck it on some heavy duty Slik legs. It's heavy but heavy duty and as little as I use it, it's great. Would love some nice CF legs for travel though...mmmmm

So I bought an xpro1 with 27 2.8 off craigslist for $1200. Going to rent an ultra wide, the 60mm macro, and still want to get the 23 1.4. The 27 at 40fov, vs the 23 at 35fov, not a big difference, but I think I'd like the 23 better. I dunno.... I dunno. More stupid decisions. I'm going to just use it for a month and see if I can live with it before buying glass.

I thought about the lumix gx7 but am probably just going to wait until a FF mirrorless is in the price range of your xpro1.

Got a rockinon 14mm 2.8 and just tried it out. Image quality is up to the hype but it will take some time to get the manual focus down. No focus confirmation, so focused on Venus at 10x and marked it for future reference.

A new ball head, set of ND filters and a CF legs are in the budget thanks to not getting the 24mm II or Zeiss... Idunno. Nice stuff to have but not the most thrilling gear investment.

The 14mm should keep me occupied for a while either way.

Had a moment of "WTF am I doing messing around with this thing? I need to not be focusing a month on testing this fucker out and just focus on creating the best work I can and making the connections to make a living off of that, wtf?!"

So, the xpro1 will likely go up for sale this weekend with an additional pair of batteries

As a self professed gear whore, I say keep it and actually give it a shot (no pun). All work and no play makes chef a dull boy, or something like that.

Yeah, but if I dump it, I can get back some of my moto build money, which would help with some of the projects I want to do, and also buy the Sigma 35 1.4, so I'd still have some fun \:\)
