how do you find your clients

I've found a good deal of clients that I've shot for free to develop a portfolio but how did all of you find your paying clients.

I've received messages back from WARN, Jeep, BlueTorchFab, and other companies about my images expressing how they liked them but how do I parley that into possible pay gigs.

There's no one word magic answer to this, but if you're receiving communication back at all, that puts you in a good spot. Keep after them, and keep contacting other people as much as you can. I just hope your grammar is better in your emails.

haha i'm tired.

most of the replies have been thru facebook when I've posted the pictures to their timeline in a way to showcase their products.

in the last two weeks, I've shot seven features, and one wheeling event. I have another wheeling event this sunday.

hopefully I can get some people interested in me shooting their vehicles possibly for some chump/side change

Duc, I mean this in the least offensive way you can imagine. Please keep this in mind as you read on.

I admire your drive and self confidence. I've seen so many photographers with full frame cameras and thousands of dollars of fast lenses hem and haw over whether their work is good enough to justify pursuing clients and charging them. They spend months, and often years, shooting friends and family for free and soliciting feedback from those photographers they admire. They second shoot weddings and hold lights for Nate Hassler to gain the experience. They go to workshops and pore over photoshop tutorials before they feel confident enough to put themselves out there and say "Here is my work. Pay me money and I will do this work for you, too." It's not an easy thing for many people to expose themselves like that.

Then you roll into town with a motherfuckin smart phone and a GoPro and BOOM website. BOOM moar clients. BOOM looking for paid gigs.

Like I said, my intent isn't to be offensive. I just couldn't imagine jumping into photography and feeling as confident as you do so soon. I find it amusing and inspiring so keep it up man

thanks Eric, I totally understand you.

I guess the responses that I've gotten from most of these companies and other people in the area have somewhat overhyped me.

i'm doing it free for my friends because i'm the one asking to shoot their vehicles because I see the passion behind their build but if someone approaches me and asks me to shoot...hopefully I can make some small, very small, amount of change back from it.

I am in no way on the level of some of you in here. all self-taught because i'm bored with IT

Duc, look at project52.org. There's a flickr group linked there that you can jump in on, do the assignments with them. They discuss figuring out your market. The pro version that I went through this year delves in deeper with a workbook. Basically, don't try to work with an agency right away because there's a lot of expenses you won't be able to carry. Figure out who you can work with in a 10 mile radius, 25 miles, 50 miles. Go to the magazine rack and take snapshots of the mast heads and then research the photo editors and art editors, find them online, interact with them on social media. Continue building your portfolio. Make it all images that you would expect to see in whatever niche you want to pursue, I take it you want to go commercial like myself. So just keep creating those personal projects. Be careful about your free work. it has to be done to get the work you want in your portfolio, but don't give away the farm. Don't give up your copyright, don't get fucked on licensing.

I've been a little lax this summer and need to finish up the year strongly. I'm a little behind where I'd like to be.

I think this is based on the project52 pro program http://www.amazon.com/Don-Giannattis-Gui...84304154&sr=1-3

I'm kind of in the same boat as siracer, if Jeep is really contacting you regarding gopro pics, then wtf, lol. On one hand it's frustrating, but on the other hand, fuck it, keep doing your shit and more power to you. I've got nothing to add as I've never had one client, never sold one pic, but congrats. Keep at it!

they thanked me and told me that If I have anymore, please send them over.

one picture that I put up on WARN's page on facebook has garnered over 175 likes. crazy enough, WARN rehosted the pic from when I originally posted it to their pages (1-2days earlier) and taged me in it because it highlighted their newest line of winches.

dumb luck in my book because I originally felt that I should have got a better center in the photograph.

Dude, just sell the GoPro and get a Rebel or a d3200 or something. You can work on your composition and stuff but the likelihood of selling images for a national print campaign with stills off a GoPro are pretty slim. I understand you're limited with gear, and that's cool, and just fine really, you don't need a 1D and L glass, but some control and especially more dynamic range will help your cause. If you know the dude with that new winch, you can stage a shoot with him, maybe during lunch on a trip, or just near the woods or something. Spray some glycerine/water mixture on it so you get nice fat beads of water, shoot at the end of the day so you get that nice low light that makes all the foliage glow. Maybe have the guy dress up a bit and pull the line out, pose him. Fuck, now I want to go do this shoot....
