Just got a possible shoot but I have to make a phone call and I want to have an answer before I do. It would be to shoot the entire menu of food for the menu and website of an opening soon restaurant in my city.
$500? more/less?
Not sure what that type of thing goes for?

$1200
Sounds time-consuming.

I can put you in touch with a 30+ year studio food photographer if you want a real number.

Depends on how much time you'll be taking setting up, shooting, editing and how you plan to deliver. You'll have to release the images to them or set it up in the contract that you're allowing them to be used for (x), (y), (z) things only. Not exactly this, but something to consider. I'm sure he wants images for menu, menu boards, promotional items, flyers, website, banner ads, other ads, etc. He isn't going to want to pay you each time he does something new. He wants an up front cost and he wants the rights to them...I already know this.
If it is a nice place, don't be afraid to charge him. If it is just an average place, asking too much won't get you anything.
do you have any lighting?

I don't have any off camera lighting no. But I figure the best I can do is use the natural light and a board to bounce it and scrim to soften shadows and I should be ok.
Just found out its about 60 items that need to be shot, by the end of this week.

I would even consider renting a tungsten video light or two with a softbox/Chimera to greatly improve the lighting on a budget. Gel it to suit. Or if familiar with off-camera flash enough, rent some of those and pass cost along to client.

Just be careful not to get caught up in the low-figure "if it goes well, we'll have future work for you" trap. 9 times out of 10, it'll be for more low-figure work if it ever even gets to that point. I had a guy who wanted pics for his t-shirt company...3 men's shirts, 4 women's. He wanted better pics that he already had on his site, but only wanted to pay $100. So I gave him $100 quality photos, w/ an option for better photo-work in the future. He even came back and said he wanted better looking models than my friends I used. Well, then sorry bud...need to pay up for models if you want that!
EDIT: if it's a quick reload scenario, $500/day sounds reasonable for a budget shoot

Might've been for the best.
500 bucks for 60 plates is sweatshop rates.

good!
Bar / grill food and natural light doesn't gel for some reason. It's too rustic.
LOL @ restauranteurs who want to cheap out on food photos for their website menu.

natural light is good, but for food shots I want to control my lighting. I want some oil on the food to make it shine and I want to position my lights so the right glimmer shows up.
If you want to do more of this, i'd consider at least investing in some Vivitar 285H flashes and a some radio poppers. I paid $55 for a set of yongnuos on ebay and the vivitars go for ~$80 each.
