So. I got home this evening;l, new tripod in hand, ready to calibrate (if you will) some lenses! Ibegan by checking out the Canon 28-135mm.
The difference is pretty astounding though IMO.
For the record, I am STILL annoyed that it needs to happen, but if its going to allow me to get better photos, I'm fine with it.
For reference, the Canon microfocus system is a sliding scale from -20 to +20.
-20 pulls the field of focus toward the camera, 0 OBVIOUSLY leaves it where it is, and +20 pushes the field of focus further to infinity, if you will.
This whole time I was POSITIVE that this lens/camera combo was focusing behind the intended subject. I was right.
All photos below were taken with as controlled conditions as I could acheive. The camera was on a brand new carbon fiber tripod with a magnesium panhead tightened down as much as it could go. the pictures were taken at about 11feet away from my subject, full zoom, 135mm, ISO 100, Lens Image Stabilization OFF, In body noise reduction OFF, 3 second exposure at f/5.6 this test is far from perfect, the paper is wavy (its fucking copy paper, what do you expect) and the lighting could definitely be better. That said, it is VERY CLEARLY better than it was for sure, and for free I cannot complain.
This is with NO ADJUSTMENT,100% Crop, no post whatsoever.

Here is -20, pulling the field of focus as far toward the camera as it will allow.

and HERE is what I settled on after experimentation.
-10. It was VERY close between -9 and -10 but minus 10 just seems to be the sharpest on WHERE i was focusing, which was the top of the C in "focus".
here is -9 for reference: http://photos.clubsi.com/clubsi/minus9.jpg

Now to play with the wide-angle!

Does micro adjusting help for any lighting and object distance? It seems like there would some kind of variance in AF systems? Ive never heard of micro adjusting before so please educate me.
I would think only marginally. Usually the focus is off by centimeters if not less, so the affect on lighting (as it relates to TTL metering) wouldn't be all that great.

I found some other way to do it using the moire of a computer monitor and the Live View function of the LCD which seemed to make good sense, too.
