So. I got home this evening;l, new tripod in hand, ready to calibrate (if you will) some lenses! Ibegan by checking out the Canon 28-135mm.

The difference is pretty astounding though IMO.

For the record, I am STILL annoyed that it needs to happen, but if its going to allow me to get better photos, I'm fine with it. \:D

For reference, the Canon microfocus system is a sliding scale from -20 to +20.

-20 pulls the field of focus toward the camera, 0 OBVIOUSLY leaves it where it is, and +20 pushes the field of focus further to infinity, if you will.

This whole time I was POSITIVE that this lens/camera combo was focusing behind the intended subject. I was right.

All photos below were taken with as controlled conditions as I could acheive. The camera was on a brand new carbon fiber tripod with a magnesium panhead tightened down as much as it could go. the pictures were taken at about 11feet away from my subject, full zoom, 135mm, ISO 100, Lens Image Stabilization OFF, In body noise reduction OFF, 3 second exposure at f/5.6 this test is far from perfect, the paper is wavy (its fucking copy paper, what do you expect) and the lighting could definitely be better. That said, it is VERY CLEARLY better than it was for sure, and for free I cannot complain.

This is with NO ADJUSTMENT,100% Crop, no post whatsoever.

Here is -20, pulling the field of focus as far toward the camera as it will allow.

and HERE is what I settled on after experimentation.

-10. It was VERY close between -9 and -10 but minus 10 just seems to be the sharpest on WHERE i was focusing, which was the top of the C in "focus".

here is -9 for reference: http://photos.clubsi.com/clubsi/minus9.jpg

Now to play with the wide-angle!

Just for shits and giggle-fucks, I also did a very similar shot with the 70-200 F4L.

The same exact image settings: iso100, F 5.6, 3 second exposure with mirror lock on, 135mm zoom. This lens is at +0- on microfocus adjustment. What a fucking difference! Fuck that 28-135mm ;\)

and FINALLY. Just because I like not sleeping. I spent some time with and ended up calibrating my F4L.
I ended up definitively finding the F4L was best microadjusted to -4. All these lenses seem to be back focusing on this camera juuust slightly.

This is at 200mm, f/4, 1.3 second shutter, mirror lock, etc etc.

God this lens is sharp \:\)

Hope you guys found this interesting!

yep, world of difference after playing with my tamron 17-50mm 2.8, and i just did a 2 minute job in the backyard, might still be able to need some improvement.

I agree that it is somewhat annoying, never had to do this on any other body, and i just lived with it for a long time because i didnt even know what micro adjusting was.

Probably reason i lived with it so long is i currently only own one lens that uses auto focus, and for video purposes autofocus is always a no no.

Much happier now though, and i think it will encourage me to take the camera along for more still excursions.

Does micro adjusting help for any lighting and object distance? It seems like there would some kind of variance in AF systems? Ive never heard of micro adjusting before so please educate me.

I would think only marginally. Usually the focus is off by centimeters if not less, so the affect on lighting (as it relates to TTL metering) wouldn't be all that great.

basically you're telling the af engine how far to twist the lens when it thinks it has a lock. there's no change to metering by this. all you're doing is fine tuning the AF engine in the camera. ambient light, the quality thereof, can affect AF performance, but that has little to do with this \:\)

microadjust has 2 modes of function on canons--MA all lenses the same, or MA each lens individually. It'll store some 25 lenses on my camera..which is overkill for me by about 21-ish.

it's pimp shit. the 60d doesn't have it even though the 50d did.

haaahahahaha

I found some other way to do it using the moire of a computer monitor and the Live View function of the LCD which seemed to make good sense, too.

Wait what? A kid I know tried to get a 5DII from loyalty less than a week ago and they said they are no longer offering it in the loyalty program...

its all about current stock, they say it that way, but its BS. As soon as they get some more in, they will put them back up. Just tell your boy to keep calling till he can get one.

Read an interesting thing in Moose Peterson's new wildlife book. He says that when Nikon sells "refurbished" gear, it's actually new gear that got loaned out to pros or the media and can no longer be sold as new. So it isn't broken and repaired gear, but merely lightly used.

Just putting that out there.
