I am not a pro but I use my 1.7x TC when I want more reach and I can sacrifice the speed. I would like to use the TC more at the local zoo but TC + Shade + moving animals = blur

Nikon TC17-e II gives you the IQ of the 1.4 with more reach. The previos version of nikon 2x was pretty harsh on IQ front but I have heard good things about the new TC20-e III.

typically there are more issues with lens to TC compatibility then there is TC to body compatibility.
From the amazon page: -1.4x telephoto extender for multiplying focal length of Canon 135mm or longer lenses -Fits all 135mm or longer fixed focal length lenses and some 70-200mm telephoto lenses -Preserves autofocus on any EOS camera when combined with f/4 or faster lens

I rent a long prime (300 or 400 2.8) if I'm worried about it. I own a 1.4 TC but I never use it because it kind of sucks my asshole.

i haven't used TC's before, but don't they reduce your lens "speed" by the same factor?
I believe that it goes something like this.
1.4x = 1 stop 1.7x = 1.5 stops 2.0x = 2 stops

pa2, above, just gave the amounts of aperture reduction, but it goes beyond that, too. They introduce a bit of softness and can slow AF beyond what the you'd normally have with slower lenses. at equivalent focal lengths and equivalent apertures, the shorter lens + tc will be softer than the longer lens stopped down.
thing is, it seems like everyone has at least one TC just in case

Everything I've read on the new canon TCs has been good I guess. The basics seem to be be patient as everything is slower when using them (although the newer IIs seem to be much improved).
I did a lot of research and talked to a friend who does professional photography and it all boiled down to this (basically I was looking at 70-200s and the 100-400):
If you have a 70-200 now, get a TC to save cash, but it will be slower. If you don't have a lens now, get the 100-400. Obviously if you have a fixed length then grab a TC to save a ton of cash.
Now my primary interest in shooting is 99% outdoors - paintball, auto racing, and animals and therefor I'm willing to for go the F2.8.
Do some research with your lens and see what people say with the TCs is the best I got but it seemed everyone agreed - TCs will slow things down.

That's exactly it, but actually mine isn't even in my normal kit... I have to remember to grab it, and honestly I can't recall the last time I used it. I think that means I don't need it. Wanna buy mine?

I think I need to pick up one of these badboys. Seems like a cheap investment for some additional range, especially for the 70-200 which can be a bit short at times.

i'm cool with my 1.4x right now. now if someone wants to sell me a 400mm... and carry it for me... *whistle*
The 100-400 has a decent reputation without being huge or heavy.

It's a bigass lake up in Canada. I've heard it's wonderful up there. I believe one of the CSI members lives near there (or did) in Thunder Bay.

hey, guys who make money off their cameras: when do you break down and throw a tc on if you're planning on being paid for those pix?
basically never.
i'll either find a loaner or rent a long prime before I resort to getting a TC.

I have the 1.4x in my bag most of the time, but rarely use it. It does come in handy at the track, but realitically I need a 300 or 400mm lens instead.
just get a 1.4 and 2.0 TC and put them both on your lens. that should give you the reach you are looking for
I'm pretty sure the auto-focus would be way too slow to be usable and the loss of IQ wouldn't be worth the reach. An entry-level 300 or 400 is only $1000 or so. I think it's a far better option.

For a fraction of the cost (and IQ), you can slap an 80-400 on a 2x on a APS-C sensor and get 1200 f/11. You'll have to manually focus though.
If you're a baller with a Nikon crop sensor, there's always the 1000mm f/6.3 Reflex from KEH for $31,150.
cheers, scott
