I guess this question is more directed at Digital since he actually makes a living off of photography. I think Nate047 does too.

Nate does mostly cars/products. Digital does b-list celebrities and athletes.

What keeps you guys from getting into wedding photography? Isn't that where the most money would be? After seeing shortSi's wedding photography thread, it seems like a ton of people are now going for REALLY good photographers for their weddings; regardless of $$$. Weddings will always be around, every weekend of every year for the rest of your life = reliable income

I think it is the other way around. I know several people who do it for a living, they start out that way and try to move away from it to other things.

I heard that Digital was scheduled to shoot Miley Cyrus in Cairo this weekend, but dropped everything when he got the call for the Mandelbaum wedding late Wednesday night.

Nah, lets not exaggerate now. iirc, the celebrities he does are mostly b-listers and sports athletes. Way different than shooting Miley Cirus or Lady Gaga.

My uncle used to do it and mainly stopped due to the stress involved. With weddings you're constantly dealing with controlling families and there is usually drama involved. Plus you have to get everything perfect the first time...can't fuck up lighting, not get something in focus, deal with a memory card mishap (where you lose all of the photos), and just so many other things that possibly go wrong that are totally out of your hands. It's not like you can be like, "Well, my camera had a glitch and all of the shots with the vows got screwed up. Sorry."

It's just too much stress. Why not do studio or more freelance type work that is usually way less stressful?

Too much stress...if you screw it up, it's someone's very-important-to-them pics. Also, wedding photogs are dime a dozen...look on craigslist, people are crying to get started for a next to nothing wage.

I personally couldn't think of something I'd less want to do than to deal with bridezillas on their "big day."

On the other hand, I got away with getting married without a having a big wedding, so it would be cool to profit from those that have been roped into having one. Those that know what they are doing charge a pretty penny for sure.

Heh, I shot a wedding ONCE. I'm no professional but they were pretty pleased with the results. Yep, pretty stressful situation to work in. You BETTER get those shots, there's no telling the bride "Hey, hang on, can you walk down the aisle again?".

Pretty sure we have a photo section now Regardless, for me it's a matter of enjoyment of your work vs. pay. I don't make very much working on staff at Modified, but I get to shoot cars, talk about cars, write about cars, get hooked up on car parts, and work on cars all the time. My dream job/goal is to shoot ads and brochures and the like for OEMs, I don't really want to shoot anything else, because I like shooting cars. \:\)

If I shot weddings I could probably make more, but my job would not be nowhere near as fun. Plus there are a a million "average" wedding photographers who are priced cheap, and seriously 95% of couples won't pay very much... Nor will they know/care if they get "average" photos back instead of good ones. It's not like wedding photography is an easy money making scheme lol, if it were I'd be doing it.

ps: I have shot one wedding before, 2 summers ago. It sucked ass honestly, it was stressful, hot, rednecky, basically not fun at all. I got $500 under the table for delivery of processed RAW files and web sized JPEGs on DVDs. No prints or online slideshows or video or anything like that. It was also for a friend of a friend's mom so I kinda gave a hook up price. I also didn't do a very good job because I didn't give a flying fuck about it and wasn't getting paid enough to make me want to work hard. Kind of a dick move I GUESS but hey man, you get what you pay for. lol. If I were to do it again I would quote at least 3 grand +travel expense for my labor... If they bit and said okay to that price, I would suck it up and do it because that's almost as much in one or two days as I make in a whole month here.

I consider myself an amateur. I still have so much to learn (don't we always?), and I need to upgrade my gear. If you can market yourself properly, and book weddings regularly, wedding photography can be extremely lucrative; but if you don't enjoy it, you won't last long. It's stressful and a lot of work.

I'm helping shoot a wedding this coming weekend. Both myself and the primary are new to it she hasn't done one before. She's mostly a portrait photog and fairly new to that too. I'm not getting paid, but I'm also not having to process anything, so I can shoot and walk. I do get a free dinner out of it from Maggiano's though, so I guess that's payment.... should be interesting.

I shot weddings, 3 so far. Its part of how I market myself along with senior shoots and such. Considering that I havent been doing photography for clients for anymore than a couple years and I dont have a lot of money for advertising... Im limited. Shooting weddings is really stressful, its for sure not easy especially when you dont have a second shooter and your basically doing everything myself. Pressure of the "big day" is a lot for some photographers to handle or so thats what ive heard for the people that say "oh I could never do that" when they ask what I do kinda thing. Its a branch of photography I'd love to gain more clientele but I believe its going to take some time.

I can see how that would cause a lot of stress. If you have two shooters would it be easier, less stressful? I guess you'd have to have someone you could trust and rely upon. Plus you'd have to share whatever profits you make from the wedding.

long story short.
wedding business is like running a factory to me. same thing different day over and over again. no thanks. good bread and butter income if you run a tight ship though.
ad campaigns and album covers pay a shit load more, more glory, more glamour, just a bitch and a half to get to that place in your career

I have a feeling that if you could find someone you trust to help you out, it's a lot easier. Most of the stress is from trying not to miss a shot. A second shooter would up the confidence a lot.

And it's got to be a second shooter that you wouldn't need to pay too awful much, so that you retain decent profit.

Some second shooters will do it for free, not many though. As for me, my second shooter is my girlfriend who is a photo major at Purdue so whatever money that is made goes back into equipment and supplies for the "business" etc. The last wedding I did(about a month ago) I didnt have her second shoot because the event wasnt that large and I could cover everything myself.

would i do it for money? not fucking likely.
would i have done it if this was their first wedding? probably not.

weddings suck. people who enjoy doing them are a rare breed and should be commended for being able to not only put up with, but enjoy doing that work. I think they're a lot like kindergarten teachers in that respect.

I have a friend on facebook that's a "wedding photographer". Only God knows why people keep hiring her. She tilts the camera at angles, cuts off people's heads, etc. And she posts all this shit on facebook for people to see. Since everyone she knows is hardcore Christian their responses are "you're amazing", "those are amazing shots", etc. I just want to tell her that they suck and she shouldn't be getting paid

Quoted for the truth. Case and Point.. Jasmine Star! She recently did a 5 day workshop on Creative Live and she told her story about how she was impressed with her wedding photographer(David Jay) and decided shortly after to quit law school.. got a Canon 30D with a kit lens and started begging to second shoot for these people who were marketing geniuses who really got her foot in the door. She admitted that her first wedding 90% of her photos were over exposed. etc
She also fully admits that she outsources her post processing(something i cant respect) she mentioned several times in the 5 day workshop that she doesn't use the light meter on her camera.. she just checks the LCD for proper exposure. She doesn't care if a photo is over exposed, it will be fixed in post, and for the majority of her 3 year career she shot everything in Auto mode!
Jasmine was voted one of the top 10 wedding photographers recently. her cheapest and smallest photo package is $7500.00 and generally nets over $150,000.00 a year which who wouldn't love. It comes down to this workshop being watched by a shit ton of "Aunt Jane" photographers with DSLR can be a wedding photographer cause Jasmine Star did it! Fuck her.. and fuck that logic cause I ask... where is the art? Where is the knowledge of the craft. She wouldn't last a damned day in the film world! </rant over>
