I have tons of shots in the POTD thread. Both pics from today were using my f/4L. I'm just now starting to learn how to use the correct settings since I'm used to fast 50mmish lenses.

This was uploaded back when I used picasa, so it's probably straight out of camera:

Here's a 100% crop taken handheld:

The helicopter is 4294967295.00m away according to the exif data. I think it was more like 2-300. Guess that's its way of saying "you missed".

Thanks...I love it, too, although the more I look at it, the more I think it's "overdone." But that's probably just me being too critical of my own work.

I didn't even really truly know how to take this pic when I took it, but it did come out pretty cool. (And it does do a good job of showing just how good that lens is.)

The fact that I like it is a dangerous indication that it might be.

Good time to bring this up.

It's common courtesy to re-size pics to 1024p on the long side when sharing on message forums.

Get a flickr / pb / etc account and use the 1024p "thumbnail" to link us to your full res photo. That should alleviate the facepalm issue.

Nice pics, btw.

Yeah...I didn't want to shrink it down since the context of the thread was "big, small, whatever" and I was trying to easily demonstrate how sharp these things are. Normally I would limit it to a 1280px max, sort of a standard set here by the pic contests of yesteryear. Plus, who doesn't have a >24" HD monitor anymore?

That bridge is like 2.5 miles long and the entire thing is almost in focus.

Here are my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR examples. It was my bread and butter until I picked up the 24-70 f/2.8 but I still prefer the look and colors of the 70-200 when I have the space to use it.

7000p is a wee bit long for some of us. Thanks for playing along.

I take lots of bird pics that no one would really care about with mine at the moment. It's a pain in the ass to take in the city because Atlanta cops hate being on camera for some reason.

Leaves are changing color here, so that will inspire me to get out more. It doesn't take an hour to defrost my lenses when walking outside with the temperature falling.

I wish I didn't have to spend fuckloads to get a decent lens.. I am so close to pulling the trigger on a 70-300 EF canon right now, lol.

At that price point, I'd seriously consider getting the 70-200 f/4 for "just a few bucks more!"

Took my lens to Capitals rookie practice yesterday. Got a lot of good shots but they're not sharp at all. Sucks. I know what the problem is, but compounding the problem is the protective glass causing refraction and giving shits to my autofocus. Action is too fast paced to try to capture through the glass. i'm still processing the pics, I'll post some up maybe tonight.

agreed. I know i'm being a gear whore at that point, but i *never* liked the 70-300is. if you're shooting in any decent light, the non-is 70-200/4 is hot

Set it on that. Pictures still came out blurry. I took about 200-300 pictures but only about 20 are worth looking at

Is everything in frame blurry or just the skaters on the ice? What shutter speed and iso were you shooting at? Do you have the f/2.8 or f/4?

I believe the consensus from this forum when I first decided upon the 70-300 was something like this:

It's all about cost vs. benefit... As well as what you'll be shooting. IMO the IS is a good thing to have when you want it, although admittedly I do use it sparingly.

Non-IS isn't a problem. Shot with my 70-200 2.8L. Focal length was mostly at 200mm. shutter speed was way too slow. I kept it on AV, shoulda kept it on M and forced both at f/2.8 and 500.

Here are a few of the ones that I lightly processed:

PS - my editing skills suck

Agreed. I used the 70-300 a bunch and it's not that great without IS. If you want a cheap lens the 55-250IS is a much better buy. If you can drop the coin though go with the 70-200 F4. I so wish I had an F4 for like 90% of my shots but I'm still learning and the 55-250IS I don't have to worry about as the $229 is nothing really.

If you want to see some of my 55-250IS shots shoot me a pm and I'll show you some versus the 70-300. The biggest difference I found though was 50% of my shots with the 300 were not good compared to maybe 1% of my 250 shots are not good.

Kevin, that's what I've been reading also.. That the 55-250 is better at 250 then the 300, and even at 300 the 70-300 is soft..

Hell, I might just buy a Sigma 70-300mm 70-300 f/4-5.6 DG Macro APO and be done with it

The 55-250 has been excellent since I got it - not one complaint at all.

Dude, if anyone should be giving me a great answer it's you. So instead of the snide comments, come up with a great reason for me to spend $$$ on a lens. Now remember I don't make my living with my camera and never will, it's nothing but a toy..

Do I need a L series lens? I fucking highly doubt it.. can I get similar shots with something cheaper? I'm thinking yes.. If the 55-250 Canon lens will do an adequate job and is better then the 70-300 (Either the Canon or Tamron) then simply tell me that and I'll go buy one this afternoon.

It's like one of you fuckers asking about TDI's and me laughing at you, come on man some simple advice about what you obviously know a lot of about would be appreciated.
