As a relative newb to the entire PS/photo clique can someone recommend some of the more useful PS plugins? I admit, I'm lazy and love if the software does most of the work for me, lol. I'm trying to focus on taking better pics so I don't have to fuck with them to much, so for now I'll worry about that and figuring out how to use this fucking camera.

Much appreciated.

I don't know nuthin' 'bout no plug ins, but it took me way too long to get it through my head that photoshop is a LAYERS based program. Layer masks are the single most important thing to learn because everything else can be figured out once you learn how to make changes to one element in the image at a time.

BTW, nothing makes layer masks easier to work with than a Wacom tablet. You don't really need an Intuos with all the bells, whistles and buttons, even a Bamboo tablet will do the job. That, and paint your masks at 400-600% viewing magnification with a very soft edged brush.

Anyway, those are my two biggest ps bits 'o advice. Layers and tablets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA8TgyTruV8

This is a good introduction to the idea, but combining separate images isn't the end of layer masks - I use them for selective sharpening, selective color management and even selective exposure (sometimes working with the same raw image two or more times in ACR to get correct exposures in different elements within the frame).

cheers,
scott

I still don't understand layer masks to the point where I feel like they would or could help me. I see how people have done them, but just don't see the benefit.

I don't know of any plug-ins either but if it helps, I use Lightroom more for editing photos. I only use photoshop for specific needs or greater deals of editing.

I have lightroom 2 and photoshop elements 7. Elements can do most of what PS can do but it is packaged for beginners. That being said, since downloading LR2 I have not opened Elements.

+1 on the layers. I have about 20 pictures that I need to layer to make 7 or 8 pictures but I just can't get motivated to try layer/masking again.

I have a shit ton of presets for LR but I rarely use them. They are easy to find, easy to install and most of the time they are free.

It's the only way to do non-destructive editing. Why do you hate freedom?

Would anyone be interested in a short writeup/how to on why layering is helpful? I would be happy to do something up...?

Nate a how to would be great!

I think that I can figure out how to convert from PS speak/buttons/menus to elements. I have an elements for dummies book but I am too dumb to use it.

Ironic I do not have Elements nor am I familiar with how the layout of the program is different, but I'll do a write up showing how and why in Photoshop. We are on CS3 at work still but the concept is the same regardless of which version you are on.

Stand by......

Elements does not let you use layer masks out of the box? That's fucking stupid. All of you on Elements, download this ASAP:

Masking is a huge part of what makes PS a useful piece of software, why they would choose to leave that out of Elements is beyond me.

Elements will let you cut out an image, select it and drop in onto another image.

You can't "paint" two images together like PS

I just don't do enough editing to warrant it I guess. I use layering, but don't use the layer mask method to do it.

Meh, I've said my piece and even made a whole little writeup so it's splitting hairs to try and convince anyone who isn't interested in making their own life easier. No matter weather you're doing heavy editing or very minimal, it's one of those things where you don't know what you're missing out on until you're used to it... And then you wonder how you lived without it. But whatever, party on Garth.
