I'm impressed with the time and effort, however, wouldn't it have been a lot easier to just shoot it with a rig or at least a pace car?

Yes and no... The rig isn'nt long enough to get that perspective, so no... And the car-to-car thing could have worked, but the paint car wouldn't be lit as evenly. Also, this car is a race car and can't be driven on city streets. 
After trying 2 more of these shots today, I think I'm going to give it a rest for a while. There are too many things that can go wrong, and unless you have a really perfect set of circumstances I think my efforts are better spent doing other kinds of shots. I am now stuck with one unusable shot, and one shot that is going to be a nightmare and take HOURS to finalize.

edit: NM, both shots are "usable," they're just not exactly what I was hoping for
