it isn't just the body, it's the whole system. Unless you're shooting with exclusively EF mount lenses, none of the EF-S mount you have at the moment would work on the 5D; so you have to factor in the cost of the lens upgrade as well.

Full frame is badass, but for MY PERSONAL PURPOSES and the 1k I think I'd rather have the 50d.

If you were talking mk 2 the choice would be simmmmpleeee

Yes I know that, but I'm talking JUST the body for now. I can rent lenses until I find the ones I want to buy

The 5D is getting pretty outdated. It may not be worth your time and effort at this point.

5D full frame is definitely nice. as outdated as it may seem, it is still a relevant camera. the main issue i have w/ it is the 9 pt autofocus. it doesn't work well w/ the 85/1.2II, but is pretty fast w/ my other lenses. reason i decided to hold onto my 5D is b/c there's no option right now that has good autofocus w/o spending a grip to upgrade to a 1D series. i'm basically making do until i near graduation, and see what else new comes out then. til then, my plan is to buy lighting gear, and rent bodies from school checkout. i've been renting the 7D a lot (better autofocus, but crop body), and also Nikon bodies to get proficient w/ both camps.

What is wrong with your current camera?
What sort of photography are you into?
Are you paid for your work?
How much cropping / post processing do you do?
How many shutter FPS do you need?
Will a crop sensor work, or do you need the depth-of-field, large sensor, and build quality from a full frame camera?

I dunno... The general rule is to put the majority of $$$ into lenses. The XTI is a good camera. If you must upgrade, check out the new 60D. 50D's are priced about the same as my Rebel.

$0.02 <---- mine

What about the 60D? I'm thinking a full frame would be better suited for portrait and wedding photography?

Yep, if you're shooting professionally, you should use professional gear. (FF)

I didn't know if you were taking pics for friends or what. That's why I asked. Pass on the XXD's.

well, I would seriously consider going to a two-body solution if you're planning to get into the wedding game for serious.

Get a 5d, mount a wide angle on it
Keep your rebel, put a long zoom lens on it

then you're covered from front to back and you dont waste time switching lenses

Good advice in general, not just for weddings.

then you already have a crop body - i say go for the 5d.

and it's not an outdated camera, regardless of what anyone tells you. Sure it may be a few years old, but it's still a fantastic rig.

It's still very capable, but I see it nearing it's upgrade soon (even though the MKII already came out). I would compare it to buying a D200 when there is a D300 and D300s out right now and due for an upgrade within the next 6-12 months.

But I like to stay current when I "upgrade" so I never feel like i'm moving backwards.

Well, for my experience (which I can admit is only amateur)I think the 5D would be a good way for me to move up without spending an arm and a leg, but still getting a professional grade body.

Now, when buying used, is there anything specific I should look for?

A good reputation. \:\)

If you are a member on p-o-t-n with more than 50? posts, you can use the for sale forum.

Not sure if $950 is a good price, but here's the first thread I found:

im thinking 7D if you can live with crop, or else wait till the 5DMKIII comes out and snag a 5DMKII on the price drop.

KEH is a very reputable reseller of old gear. And I still say the 5d original is a work horse.

the original is rated at or around 130k shutter actuations - when looking for a used model check that number.

Also, check the general condition of the body - scuff marks, brassing on the hot shoe, etc. If it's in rough shape you can be sure it was used hard. Look for gently used.

The biggest benefit to the rapid release of pro/semi-pro gear is that it trickles into the used market with minimal to normal use. You can score big if you do your homework.

-edit-
looked it up, original 5d rated at 100k actuations.

were you one of those that suggested people to wait for the 5d2 release to snag a 5d1 when it drops in price?

then when the 5d3 comes out, you'll chime in and say "the 5d3 is so much better, let's jsut wait for canon to sort out the bugs to snag one, the 5d2 is dated."

How bout you keep your frugual beliefs to yourselves. I know none of us have figured out how to grow money on trees, but your suggestions are sometimes worth as much as horseshit. This is fucking technology, you don't wait. You get what you can afford and go from there.

Now that I got the rant out of the way, I'd suggest you jump straight to the 5d2. It isn't just the more updated technology, it's mostly the iso. I did a buddy with a friend who's a 5d shooter over the weekend and he told me after thank GOD he rented a mk2, because the mk1 is almost rendered useless when he needs to get the iso up above 4000.

Your crop body and the 5d is almost on the same timeline, so the iso performance would be similar. The 5D would still be superior because it's sensor size is bigger and the pixel count isn't insane, but for times when you absolutely NEED to go above 1600/2000, you'll know w/o having to worry that you can crank stuff up in the mk2 and not have the nagging thought of noise in your head as you shoot.

Make sure to do some research before jumping in... Although the 5D may be an older design, it still rocks the 50D and even the 7D in some ways which may be important to your style of shooting. High ISO wise, the 5D won't hold a candle to the 5D MkII but it also costs a lot less... Also the 5D is not ideal if you need a high burst rate (action packed wedding? lol) and the A/F system is not that great. However, at ISO 100, and in manual focus mode, the 5D kills the 7D and 50D in image quality. Priorities.

Sensor size matters.

How does the 5D compare with similar era 1D/DS?

if the 5d2 is out of the question, then yes, get the 5d. Unless you happen to hop across a 1Ds2 for marginally more than a used 5D, get the 5D
