ME WANT THIS SO BAD
EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye
Leading off Canon's parade of new glass is a fisheye zoom designed to give a 180* field of view on any of Canon's full frame, 1.3X or 1.6X image sensor cameras (at different focal lengths of course). Plus it can achieve a full 180* circular image on full frame cameras.
It includes both UD and aspherical elements as well as an optional lock feature intended for use with 1.3X and 1.6X cameras that will prevent the lens from being zoomed wider than the lens' coverage area for that sensor format, to prevent unintentional vignetting in the corners.
Like all of the lenses and teleconverters being announced today, the EF 8-15mm f/4L's front and rear elements have a fluorine coating that is meant to make them easier to clean and better able to repel water droplets.
The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye is to ship in January 2011 at an expected street price of US$1400 in the U.S.

Also the following:
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS -- $1,500 EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II -- $7,000 EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II -- $11,000 Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF 2x III -- $500
and New 500mm f/4, 600mm f/4 coming next year

Current Nikon Current Canon New Canon
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS $550 $1250 $1,500 EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II $5900 $4500 $7,000 EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II $9000 $7100 $11,000
I am not a canon guy so I don't know if we are talking apples to apples but the current prices from amazon (not list) seen a good bit lower. Also, what makes the canon and nikon 70-300s so much different?

the MSRP prices are usually higher than actual retail prices I think, so the 1500 for the 70-300 might come in lower in reality.
as for the difference vs. nikon equivs I can't really say - do the nikons have IS similar to the canons?

Canon's is brought to you by the letter L. Nikon's version is most definitely built to consumer specs (though several pros like its optics, especially when the next closest choice is the twice as heavy, slow focusing, $1600 80-400 VR)
cheers, scott

do the nikons have IS similar to the canons? The price quoted above is for the Nikon 70-300 with VR (vibration reduction)

I think this more explains the price different. Nikon doesn't make a prosumer 70-300 4.5-5.6 lens.
Ok carry on!

Keep in mind Canon currently has two versions of the 70-300:
70-300 f/4-5.6 IS ($500) 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 DO IS ($1200)
However you look at it, $1200 for a 70-300 variable aperture lens is waaaaay overpriced. The 70-200 f/2.8 goes for less than that, doesn't it?

Priced a 300mm prime lately? Variable aperture lenses get a bad rap as a whole because kit zooms are all that way, but in a world where you can jack up the ISO with minimal repercussions, a 4.5-5.6 lens can still be a quality bit of glass available at a fraction of the weight or price of a prime equal to the long end (a 70-200 f/2.8 with a couple teleconverters may or may not be a better option). If the build quality is there, there's nothing wrong with a $1500 variable aperture zoom.
cheers, scott

the way I look at it, the Nikon 70-300 AF-S VR is about $700...this one is more than twice that. The 70-200 has a faster aperture, and not only for low light, but for better bokeh.
I think either canon is incredibly stupid in thinking people will buy it, or incredibly smart in thinking people will pay that.

I'd love to get my hands on that new 400mm for a track day.
You guys should rent some of these lenses and you'll see why they cost thousands more. Edge sharpness, less CA, IS/VR, faster aperture, quick/accurate AF... The list goes on.

I have rented the 100-400 push/pull lens - and I have to say it is pretty fucking awesome.
Also, if you don't think people will pay the prices for the new lens I ask you to find me the new 70-200 f/2.8 IS II for sale on B&H or Adorama - they're still hard to find there. People will pay, oh yes... they will pay.

yeah $2200+ for that 70-200 2.8 IS USM II...... I considered it... NOT!
that's the thing - that lens isn't intended for the back yard photographer. it's priced that way because the people who it's suited for are making their money off that lens.
