I talked to my wife about it over the past few days. She's really getting supportive of me and wanting to launch my pro-mateur career into photography. I don't believe I'm good enough yet, but others tend to like my pictures. i'm hoping to pick up some work shooting some youth sports to get the basics down, then move on from there. I can't wait to get the lens and start shooting!!!!!! I'm flippin' excited!!! I'm just wondering now if I should have gotten the IS version instead of this one....

I wouldn't call me lucky, I had to drop $$$ for it. Gotta start somewhere though, and there are high barriers to entry into this. I figure if I start getting paid gigs it'll pay itself off. worse case scenario, if I give up, I could probably sell it for what I paid or slightly less.

OT

I just found something as expensive as lenses...cabinet trim and moldings

I will be dropping ~1500 on 144 linear feet of prestained maple trim and moldings. That would get me a used 14-24 or a new 16-35 f/4 w/ SB900 or a new body.

leave the monopod and tripod at home. sideline NFL guys use a monopod because they're toting 400mm primes, the 70-200 in outdoor light is better used handheld.

hopefully. I had to ditch my shitty tripod because it couldn't hold any telephoto lens still enough for longer exposures.

I bring my monopod when I shoot at the track but don't use it a ton. It's handy to have if it gets a bit windy or if I get lazy later in the day.

i use a monopod, only on the 400 or the 600

300 or shorter, it's all hand held. Way less clumsy.

I have a 2.8L IS, and I can shoot pretty sharp handheld down to 1/10 with it.

That's one thing I do like about Canon; the overall balance is better than Nikon (in my hands).

I woudln't even think twice to go 1/10, 1/8 handheld back when I was shooting Canon; can't replicate the same result with the dark side.
