FOR THE LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY
by Chase Jarvis
http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2010/08...content=Twitter

Seems like the more I listen, the more I hear people talking about the gear, the business of photography, the widgets. Let us not forget the simple love of photography.

I understand why there’s so much rhetoric in our industry about the business of photography and the gear and the gadgets. There is the common stereotype that most creative people aren’t good business people. There is fear. Gear is easier to talk about than vision. Exposures are exact, the camera dials have numbers. There is a ‘right’ answer to many of these questions.

But where is your love of pictures? Where are your actions that back this up?

Can you pick up a book of photographs and get lost in it?
Can you walk around with your iPhone or Android or your point and shoot or whatever and take 100 pictures knowing that they’ll never be for a client or a portfolio?
Do you love hunting for pictures?
Will you stay up late or get up early for pictures?
Do you sometimes ‘see’ life as a photograph?

It’s different for all of us, but when you can take a break from all the chatter, remind yourself–as often as you can–why you love photography.

I personally kinda like taking quick snapshots with my phone more than the D50, lol.

Everything I've done to this point has been for the love of the game. Love without money gets kinda old eventually.

There's a reason I do what I do, love every day of it. Even when I have to shoot the god damned SRT-4 LOL \:\)

I just regressed. Sold all my dSLR stuff, and found an old school JDM Pentax K1000. We'll see how bad the learning curve is....

Awesome, you certainly won't have any shortage of lenses, that is for sure. I commend you for going to a Film SLR. I'll probably feel more nostalgic in five years, but at this time, I am spoiled with the digital aspects of my DSLR.

I kind of jumped into the Camera game a little too fast I think. It was just a spur of the moment thing when I saw the camera for sale on Woot brand new with a 18-55mm lens for $579.99. I'd been wanting a DSLR, I just hadn't given it serious thought as to what kind or what I was going to do with it. I don't regret buying it. I just thought I would be more serious about it as a hobby. Instead, I've found myself just using it as a very expensive Point and Shoot instead of being "artistic" and playing with the settings/going places just for the purpose of shooting pictures. I am not exactly an artistic person anyway. The artistic part of my brain seems to be turned off or something.

Slap a prime on your camera and that will take care of anything being too easy. The variable aperture 18-55 isn't very "inspiring" IMHO.

Go on flickr and check out what people around the world have done with canon's cheapest available lens:

I do sometimes see life as a photograph. I walk around look at things and compose shots in my head whenever I don't have my camera. when I do have my camera, it hurts to concentrate.

I was talking to a few of you guys about that in the shoutbox at lunch yesterday.

The other lenses I use are USM, so I'm going to break mine to pieces.

Then you have canon's fine set of choices for a 50mm...

{edited out a ton of stuff}

Sorry for the tangent.

Since we just found out yesterday that we'll be homeschooling our daughter, looks like I'll be her art teacher amongst other things. Time to find a D70 and a prime for cheap.

cheers,
scott

A relative donated a D200 / 18-200mm to me a few hours ago. Going to pick it up the next time I visit.

Possibly the most awesome / evil gesture ever.

That's a sweet deal. The ergonomics with ruin you for Rebels, but the ccd sensor, not so much.

cheers,
scott
