Hey guys, im looking to get my first DSLR. I want to stay around the 1k range with lens. Im looking at the Canon T2i and Nikon D90. Which of these would you guys get? Also, should I get one that comes with a lens, or should I just get the body and get a different lens that may be better for around the same price as the kit? Also, how are the Sony Alphas?

But srsly. The d90. I <3 them. The only thing the t2i does better is video.

And the nikons button lay outs are SO much better and this coming from a guy who currently shoots canon.

The kit lens in the d90 is pretty nice. Decent range. Theres a deal going on i think it was Amazon. 1k shipped. DO WANT

Yea I was leaning towards the D90. I was looking at some pics of both in a review and the D90 had much better IQ. Its $1019 at amazon right now. Is this a good deal?

D90 is much easier to use than the T2i, and I'm a canon guy who just bought a T2i.

Either one is great but the D90 just seems better. No technical term for it.

Buckle up if it's your first DSLR. I'm already turning tricks at the corner to pay for lenses and stuff.

The D90 comes with a good lens, too.

Scott,
Why cheap out the d3x is clearly the best camera for new dslr user. Also, the d3s is tainted with video.

Bah ISO > pixel count

I've shot some skateboarding video with a ridiculously expensive Canon digital video camera that a friend borrowed from the university he works at, and it was fun. If I had more access to it, I'd do much more of it. But the one thing I noticed was that for shooting like I did (very low perspective by just holding it by the top grip while rolling on my board as a dolly), DSLR video would have been retardedly useless there.

cheers,
scott

I have owned the D90 and the T2is bigger brother the 7D. I have a hard time deciding what my real recommendation is because i love both.

If you will ever use video for anything, i have to say T2i. If not, then probably D90.

I will say that Nikons button layout and fit and finish is better on the D90. For some reason until you get to the pro-sumer level of cameras (7D and above), canons rebel line is usually a bit more plasticy and not as nice to hold.

Either way you will have an amazing camera.

I wouldnt pay more than $800 for either one (body only). I think with the D90 you should be able to find closer to $700 if you dont mind a refurb. T2i maybe $50-100 more on that price.

As i said though, video wise its not even close the T2i blows anything nikon has ever made out of the water. I would have gladly stuck with nikon if they woudl have just listened to the market that they pretty much pioneered but they didnt, so i had to jump ship.

The best recommendation is to go hold and shoot with both of them and find out which one fits you best. They're basically the same camera (in a non-technical way of describing it) so from here it is just personal preference.

And get a body only so you can get the Tamron 17-50 lens, which will be 1000x better than the kit lens.

Do you guys think its worth it to spend the extra money on lenses with image stabilization? Also, if you are limited to 2 lenses and are going to europe, which lenses would you guys bring?

I honestly dont think IS is worth it, but some do. If your shooting below a certain shutter speed you need to be on a tripod, or resting on something. Otherwise your golden unless your trying to do some super long low light exposer in which case youd still probably need a tripod.

Canon has come out with a new revolutionary IS system that really is awesome, but so far its only on one lens. The 100mm 2.8 macro. Other than the IS on that lens, i say not worth it.

Ive never had issues with blur.

For europe, id take a tamron 17-50mm 2.8, and then one of 2 lenses. A really fast prime if your going to be taking night shots. Maybe like an 85mm 1.8, OR a long zoom if your going to be taking a lot of scenery, landscape, building shots etc... Something in the 70-200 range.

If I was going to europe, i'd look at either the Nikon 18-200 or the Tamron 18-270. For trips, i want convenience.

yeah, but one fuck job off ebay wipes out all the savings you might accumulate by avoiding full price.

if you want used at least go through the used stores at adorma, b&h or go to keh.com

I highly doubt i'll ever use eBay to buy a lens. I highly doubt i'll ever buy a lens I haven't had a chance to use/see/touch before buying it either unless it is brand new.

Wait, actually I did buy a lens I hadn't seen/touched/used beforehand and got lucky.

Full retail price is only good if you want the warranty or you just can't find what you're looking for in the used market. That said, I usually buy locally or through BH/Adorama/Abes

Most of the reputable ebay lens sellers put multiple pics of lenses, so you can see every angle. Then again I mostly buy older/cheaper lenses anyway, so some patina is expected and if i get hosed im not out a ton of money.

CL is sometimes a good resource, and like the others have said keh, bh, adorama etc...

I used ebay to buy my D80 kit and I didn't get what was advertised.

The listing was for a D80 with 18-55 VR and a 70-300g with a bunch of other stuff thrown in. The bit of "stuff" worth any value was the lowepro slingshot 100AW.

The D80 box said 18-55 VR but the lens was not VR, by the time that I realized that I was missing the VR the company was no longer a seller on ebay. Also, the 70-300g was a grey market lens.

I say it in every gear buying thread, but KEH is the business. There's no way I'm buying new gear when I can get like-new gear for hundreds less.

Ok guys, thanks for all the input. I bought a D90 body (yes i know the D90 replacement is supposed to be announced next month) and Tamron 17-50 VC. Im thinking of getting a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, thoughts on that?

With the d90 you can go for the 1.4d instead of the more expensive af-s lens.

The Nikon primes I've used (24mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.8) are pretty damn quick focusing without the AF-S.

Yeah, no problem. It's even a good idea in case you ever move up to a full frame sensor, you won't have to ditch your lenses. And in the meantime, you get to use the lenses' "sweet spot" in the center of the image circle (where they are most sharp).

Plus, if you don't need the latest and greatest AF-S and VR and what have you, there are some great used buys on lenses from the 90's and early 00's designed for film (I love my 35-70 f/2.8 D which is less than half the price of a 28-70 f/2.8 which is itself only about 2/3 of the price of the current 24-70 f/2.8. You will sometimes see more color fringing with older lenses, but it's all fixable in photoshop (and to be honest, I still see fringing with both my 80-400 and 14-24, and they've got all the coatings to prevent it).

cheers,
scott

Fuck all this noise.

Go handle both cameras, take the one that feels better in your hands.

For some people the canon layout works better, for others the Nikon.

Everything else, unless you're a pixel peeping retard, is the same.

Can a d90 even meter through that lens? I am pretty sure it won't nor will it autofocus.

Cheap is not always the answer.

Meter? I think it can, it even meters (although not perfectly), on my Canon 7D.

Autofocus? No. But who needs autofocus anyway?

Not paying $300 more for a lens thats optically the same just so i can autofocus.

Is that an Ai-s lens?

Looks like it can't use the 3D matrix metering.
