I'm in the same boat. I shoot cars (that aren't moving) and the shots look like ass.

Oh yea, white balance ;\)

This was posted on our local forum. Mostly common sense, but there are a few good tips in it:

Back against a wall using a prime? **nevermind, I read the exif** Your other shots were at wider angles, just wondering why there's no front bumper. (unless it was removed)

That shot is interesting to me because I recognize the name on the car. It's dirty and beat up from being raced. Almost like a candid car shot.

Nice M, if that is yours.

yeah, the flag poles could go, but I don't think they ruin the shot.

No wall, I just wanted a tight crop - though my guess is I was probably thinking it would be just a hair looser. I shoot the D700 most of the time which only has a 95% viewfinder, so I've gotten used to leaving just a touch out of the frame from where I want to crop - then in shots like this with the D300 I do the same even though the D300 has a 100% viewfinder.

The M Coupe belongs to my friend Mark. All my cars are beaters (to put it charitably).

If I had read the Exif data correctly the first time, I probably would have just said "looks good" and guessed the viewfinder situation. As much as I try to filter through what I type, really dumb things still fly out.

I knew you liked older vehicles, that's why I commented on the Coupe. A friend had one and the rear tires on that thing were crazy looking.

Better I guess, but had there been flags out on the flagpoles, I would have preferred leaving them in.

cheers,
scott

I can see you in the front bumper, all stylistic choices, methods and opinions aside, I would say that is one thing you should absolutely remove. Should be pretty easy as well, the paint on that car looks very forgiving. \:\)

Yeah. I removed myself from the hood shot, but I didn't like the results. Fuck, I'm still on the fence about the flagpoles. They remind me, alternately, of either a ship's masts or a mohawk (both of which are cool to me).

cheers,
scott

Wrd, not to nitpick but I can see some water spots on your lens in the front end shot also, and the second shot isn't displaying for me (flickr says it's unavailable)

Yeah, it was raining and the lens hood on the 14-24 doesn't do that great a job of protecting it. But to be honest, I thought that was just a weird reflection off something in the garage, I hadn't thought about it as a raindrop on the lens. Re-uploaded the original second image.

cheers,
scott

It used to be. Hood is carbon fibre.
