The other night when I was taking some long exposure pics of traffic in front of my house, I tried taking some of the huge full moon. All I kept getting was a bright white ball, nothing else. Tried zooming in as much as possible with the 18-135mm, tried zooming all the way out...nothing. Do people use filters when shooting the moon or just really good lenses?

shoot it following the sunny 16 rule: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunny_16_rule

the moon is like a big reflector, so it meters very bright, especially the full moon.

if it's not spot on with the sunny/16 rule then change your shutter or aperture to compensate for the over/exposure.

Gotcha. I'll have to try this at the next full moon. It was pissing me off, just kept looking like one big white spot with no definition or anything.

yeap, it's akin to shooting a bare bulb in a dark room. if you try to evenly expose the scene you'll blow out the bulb.

Here's how I would shoot the moon with your equipment (see? the Member Info thread works!)

1. Securely mount D80 to tripod and rack out your longest lens.
2. Play around with your exposure settings to get proper exposure on the moon, ideally in the f/8 range. At 135mm the moon still may not be big enough for spot metering, so experiment a bit and always watch your histograms for clipped highlights. You'll start to get blur if your shutter is open too long, but the moon is bright enough for this not to be an issue at reasonable settings.
3. Once you have your framing and exposure set, go into your Custom Settings Menu. Turn on #28 (Self Timer) and set it for 2 seconds. Turn on #31 (Exposure Delay Mode)
4. Shoot away!

Step #3 is the free version of a remote shutter release and MirrorUp mode. Your camera is on the tripod and you hit the shutter release button. The self timer gives you two seconds for the vibrations from your touching the camera to die down. The exposure delay mode flips up the mirror and gives you 4/10ths of a second for those vibrations to die down before opening the shutter. Today I use the Nikon MC-30 cable release and an honest MUp mode, but these settings were how I always shot with a tripod when I had my D80. I eventually bought the $20 ML-L3 wireless remote and would highly recommend it. It saves you the two second delay, but you'll still want to leave the .4s exposure delay mode on.

Oh, and remember...never use VR/IS when you're mounted to a tripod. I only have two VR lenses but I leave VR turned off so I never forget. It's easier for me to remember to turn it back on when handholding than to turn it off when on a tripod.

Sweet, thanks Eric. I always use the Exp. Delay mode and self timer when shooting at night. I've been looking to getting a remote but wasn't sure if I should get the cable or wireless? I read that the wireless doesn't allow you to I guess lock the shutter when using the bulb setting like you can with the cable remote.

I'll have to test when I get home, but I'm pretty sure can lock the shutter for bulb with the ML-L3

I've used both and I wish the D700 were compatible with the ML-L3. I much prefer that $20 wireless to the $70 plastic MC-30 cable you have to attach and detach. I guess Nikon figures all the "pros" somehow prefer spending 3.5x more on a more cumbersome product because it looks the part.

The ML-L3 has all the functionality of the MC-30. While shooting in BULB mode your first click will open the shutter, the shutter then remains open until you run out of battery or you click the ML-L3 a second time. The only thing to be aware of is that unless you're indoors where the infrared signal can bounce around you'll have to make sure you point the ML-L3 towards the front of the camera (where the sensor is). Not a big deal, just don't expect to be triggering the shutter from behind the camera outdoors without putting the remote up above or to the side a bit.

EDIT: and there's always the MC-36 if you think you'll be needing an intervalometer in the near future. Overkill if you just need a remote shutter release though.

Here's a tip from Joe McNally about mixing other elements in with your moon shot (it doesn't really address your question, but that's already been covered)...

And here's my best attempt so far at compositing a moon picture...

cheers,

The cable remote I was looking at is the MC-DC1 for the D70/80 and it's only $23 from B&H. I've heard mixed reviews about the wireless pertaining to having to bounce the IR signal off of objects. That's why I figured for the same amount the MC-DC1 might be better.
