I was thinking of a gift for my dad's birthday and someone mentioned the idea of a chartered fishing trip. Basically they take you out on a boat (anywhere from 35'-55') for 5-6 hours. Depending on the cruise and where they dock, the location and sights differ. They provide all the fishing gear as well as refreshments. The friend that recommended it has been on one and said that the captain will clean and grill the fish that you catch as well. I'm finding prices to be about $130 per person. For an extra $30/person they will cater the event or for $50 they will provide a steak dinner.
I want to do something different for my dad (who enjoys fishing but doesn't fish often) and so I'm considering this option but there are many variables. For one it isn't cheap. The experience will be contributed by those on the boat. I'd like to invite a number of people (friends/family, all males) but asking them to fork over $200 is asking a lot. I was thinking of fronting the bill for the boat and just asking them to pay for the meal (not a bad deal for $50, but still not cheap for me). I could keep it small but again, I think the company will add to the experience.
Ideally earlier in the summer would have been a better time to go, and assuming I find availability, when would it still be comfortable weather to enjoy such a trip? Latest mid-October?
Does anyone have any referrals or know people that offer this service (I'd rather use a referral).
