I need to top up the attic insulation in our new/old place. The 2nd floor is hot as hell. I have to set the main floor to 21* to get the 2nd floor to 24*.

Any of you guys done it before? How hard is it? Keep in mind I'm pretty much a mechanical idiot and the extent of my skills is using a screwdriver. Should I just hire a contractor?

I did it a few years ago when I reno'd my place.

Its pretty straight forward but will need 2 guys, one to feed machine outside and one in attic. The unit I rented from HD had a broken remote so I had to yell down to my brother to turn off the machine when I wanted to take a break or move to a new spot and not keep blowing everywhere.

Just get a stick and mark on it with tape the thickness you want and just prod around once in awhile to make sure you have even coverage, thats it. Wear a protective suite, respirator and glasses. Not the cheap paper respirator, the good ones with filters.

You could try the Roxul RockFill. It might take a bit longer though and may cost a bit more

Given the temps in the attic, I'd rather go the blow in route cause it would be way quicker.

See if the government is giving out any rebates for insulating more. When I did mine they were doing that whole home improvement rebate kick and I actually made money by doing it.

Also don't expect your temps to drop a lot. I still have a hot 2nd floor and cool first floor regardless of how insulated my attic is

the insulation will help, but for the hot upstairs vs. downstairs (super common issue with many homes), a multistage furnace (and new a/c) would make a huge difference vs. the older style tech/units. a 2-stage would do the job as well.

I have a new home, and the 2nd floor is still warmer by 1-2C ... This is with the heat exchanger running 24/7 I'm thinking of unplugging that bitch ...

That $249 Nest ain't helping much at this point either - it reads the temp wrong as it seems it's internal circuitry heats up the thermal probe by 1-2C

^lol I hope you weren't actually expecting nest to save you money.

I bought the nest for convenience and I like the GUI on the app.

I'm having a hard time believing this. Sure it will be more energy efficient but a hot upstairs has more to do with improper flow. Getting a new furnace won't help that. Adjusting all the registers in the house and maybe upgrading the supplies to the second floor would make a bigger difference. I think having an hvac company come in and measure and equalize all registers would be a good upgrade.

Vas PM'd me, and one thing he suggested was that my soffits needed to be upgraded (house is 30 years old). When we did our home inspection, the inspector did mention that, but moreso as a moisture issue vs temperature. I'm gonna look into it.
