So I was thinking about picking up a specialized epic comp at the bike show. Specs are non carbon with SRAM X9 rear derailer and SRAM X7 components. What are your thoughts?

You want 29inches + rigid + single speed.
Make it so.

Do it. Saying x9 and x7 doesn't mean much, derailleurs and shifters are the least important part of a mountain bike. Fork/shock, wheelset (and also sizing at this point 26/650b/29), and brakes are what you should be looking at. You also do not want a single speed.

Because they have an absolutely fucking incredible warranty and stand behind their product. I've had nothing but unreal service from them that I probably would not have received from most other companies.

Love to.

I bought this bike at the beginning of 2012
http://www.specialized.com/ca/en/bikes/archive/2011/stumpjumper/sjhtswcarbon29er

Beginning of that summer I was at the 24hr race at albion hills in Bolton like I am every year. On one of my laps I kept dropping my chain between the rear derailleur cage and jockey wheel. Specialized was at the race loaning out demo bikes for racers to try out so I went to see one of the guys there and explain my problem. He stopped everything he was doing, put my bike on the stand and took a XO rear derailleur from a demo bike and put it on mine. A few days later my local shop received a brand new XX rear derailleur from specialized so I could swap it back on my bike and return the XO.

Fast forward to the end of the 2012 season and same thing starts happening, quick call to specialized Canada and another new XX derailleur is shipped overnight to my local shop.

Beginning of the season this year bike is acting fine but sure enough around June same problem. Call specialized again, they send out a 2013 XX derailleur which has larger teeth on the pulleys to better engage the chain and prevent the slipping (I obviously wasn't the only one having problems). We install and I ride the bike as usual and near the end of June I once again head to the 24hr race. Problem happens AGAIN during the race. Specialized is there again so I roll up (like a boss), and see the same dude from last year (ended up finding out he is the dude in charge at the Canadian headquarters in Quebec). Anyways, he takes my bike for a spin, comes back 10 minutes later and claims everything is shit including the sram XX brakes. He wants to get rid of all the sram drivetrain and brakes and put on brand new 2013 shimano xtr gear.
He was tied up with demo bikes and taking care of the specialized womens race team so he fixed me up for my next lap with an XO or X9 derailleur then told me to visit him at his campsite at midnight!
Go visit him at midnight and he's working on the bikes of the women on the Rebecca Rusch team. Puts my bike up on the stand, rips all the sram gear off, outfits me with new xtr, tunes it all up and away I go on a finely tuned machine. While he was swapping everything we got talking about my 2x10 crankset and he said he would send me new rings for it since I was running the smaller rings. Sure enough after the race my local shop had a bunch of brand new rings in various sizes for me to take and do with as I please.

I was never a specialized fanboi and only bought one because that was what my favourite local store started selling. I'm glad I did and would not think twice about buying another.

No offense man, but you will never use that bike even to 10% of its potential/intended use. Not sure what kind of biking you plan on doing, but you are somewhat late to the game if you think you are going to just dive into MTB...this isn't pussy road cycling (I am serious).

Just get a decent hard tail and call it a day. This is coming from someone who was a regular on the don valley/taylor creek trails. Not a crazy trail, but decent. I just can't see you do any of that shit.

Nice bike.
The "brain" system on the specialized suspension is absolutely amazing (when setup properly of course), it's amazing how well it works.

The fork is a really nice fork, can never go wrong with a rockshox reba or sid.

Can't comment on the brakes but i've heard lots of praise for other models of formula brakes.

The SRAM drive train I could either take or leave. It will work well and probably never miss a shift. (My issue in my above post was because I was running the highest level gear made for extreme weight savings. Saving weight isn't always a good thing).

Tires are awesome. Specialized makes some incredible rubber. I run a fast trak up front and renegade out back. Those are also tubeless ready with is super XD XD XD XD XD.

Rims are also awesome. Roval is specialized house brand. Their carbon rims and extremely popular.

Crankset is probably great. My crankset is a carbon unit made by specialized and is one of the stiffest cranks out there.

Honestly the bike is very nicely speced and wouldn't leave me wanting to upgrade.

Is it worth the purchase? I would definitely not buy that at MSRP. Specialized charges a bit of a premium for their stuff compared to the competition. If you are getting a deal and it's within your budget id say hell yes.

Norco isn't as popular but I think they're a great Canadian company. Great bikes and generally a lot more bang for your buck.

Not a good recommendation. A hardtail take a lot more skill to ride, it requires good bike handling skills and finesse to really keep a rhythm and flow nicely. For somebody starting out, having a moving back end is nice and really helps soak up the bumps that they would otherwise be bouncing over.

If he buys one he's going to use it once, complain about how its too cold to ride, he's too busy etc etc and it will collect dust.

It's like grade school when the popular kids got the latest Nike's, everyone wanted them \:\)

I had an old school bike, a Rocky Mountain hammer race. I ride my road bike, its not collecting dust, so why not alternate road/mountain.

YOLO!

I'd agree with you if we were talking some decent trails...OP will never ride anything challenging, I guarantee it. Don't want to sound like Euphoric, but it will be a commuter bike on a gravel shoulder at best.

Hard tail for cost IMO anyway. Nothing difficult about them, but you are the resident expert so I will trust you on that. I've had cheap variants of both.

I don't doubt you will ride it (once a month ) just saying the bike is beyond overkill. I just kinda laugh at the n00b on a 29er, but that's just me.

I will get my wife a F150 Raptor next for her DD to school, which is 3 km from home. Gonna be SOLID. The driveway into the school is really steep so yea, it's totally justified /wayne logic

I'm going to work on getting vacation for the race next year, if I'm not already off.

I want to do the 24 next year with some friends. It's more of a coordination issue, but something I want to do.
And I will do Mansfield again... and either the summer or fall 8.

Maybe I'll get Choco on my team ;\)

Cost wise a hardtail is better. If it isn't being trail ridden, again hardtail is obviously better. Any real off road trails and a full suspension bike is the way to go, especially for a new trail rider, it is a much friendlier ride (when the suspension is properly setup), compared to a hard tail and definitely cause less frustration with new riders. Plus it is very rare to find many people riding hardtails these days. The full suspension bikes are engineered so well and the suspension has come so far that it doesn't have the pedal bob and squishy feeling that used to be associated with full suspension bikes.

Friend broke his rear triangle / seat stays on his Santa Cruz Blur XC Carbon. Luckily, Outerbike is going on here in Moab. Talked to the SC guys, having another triangle shipped out asap, and having a blur trail loaner/demo bike until it comes in.

how's that for service.

Specialized brain... Have fun with the maintenance.

Y'all need to stop bugging Wayne. Not like he's leveraging his home to buy something to show off; he can clearly afford the finer things in life. Will it be overkill? Probably. But shit, if that was the case, we'd probably all be better off driving 80's tercels and buying everything from Walmart.

Broken carbon frame, how's that for build quality!

And lol at making a big deal about servicing the brain, such a big deal to service once a year when you are servicing the other suspension components like you should be anyways.

And i'm kidding with the SC comment, i'm a big fan of their bikes. I've owned a superlight and currently own a v10. If I lived somewhere with more mountains i'd buy a bronson in a heart beat.

anyone to buy my carbon framed hardtail? Built it rode it once and it sits lol
juice disc brakes, remote lockout adj. lightweight front fork (name escapes me now, manatoulin i think?) SRAm derailer and shifters, carbon bars. If intersted i'll dig out my build sheet.
The wheels are the only thing you weird bike guys would want to swap out as they are a bit on the heavy side, but due to my size i didnt want to bend anything haha.
