So my daily driver: 1996 Civic, is starting to get on my nerves large mostly because I don't have enough time to tend to the little issues that it has.

It's brutal, paint is peeling, there are dents all over, scratches, some rust, etc.

The other bad things, it seems to overheat (I don't think the rad is holding pressure), i have to bleed the air out once in a while and it works well for a few weeks.

It has started leaking a bit of oil, my fucking driveway is now covered and I end up parking the civic in the garage while the m3 is outside to stop the oil patches.

Last night I accidently broke one of the door locks, so one rear door is shut permanently (well you can fix it, but it's a bitch).

I have a water leak in the pass side foot well, were I can acquire close to an inch of water on heavy down pours (refer to thread with flower growing).

Other than that, she is a great little car, i've kept up with all service records, changed the t belt and water pump along with the tranny 8,000km ago. Runs great.

So here I am now trying to decide what to do.

A: Get a slightly more expensive car, maybe 03 Accord for 5k

OR

B: Get an 99-00 civic in better condition, but a clean one for 2k

Leaning towards B because I have winters for it, I have my tow bar for it which i use at least once a month, the cars are bulletproof and I can fix them in my sleep.

Then you say, why not just fix the current one: well i don't want to deal with it because aesthetically I can't fix it, the car i just nasty looking, I don't like fixing shit that shouldn't be broken in the first place (leaking water into interior). I'd rather get another car and just do basic maintenance like I always have and save myself the hassle.

Keep car, get more expensive car, get another replacement civic?

So ... in it's current condition, you think you can get anything out of it?

You have better things to do with your time, like mod the house.

If you already have winter rubber for the Civic, I vote to stay with another Civic.

With all the other shit on the go with my house renos, helping gf do lesson planning for her class, weddings every other weekend and getting 3 hours of sleep a day due to long hours I highly doubt I can pull off a civic build...lmao if that was my only options i might as well walk into a dealer and buy a brand new car.

I think i can get 800 for it, the car IS solid, it drives you around you just have to take the time and iron out small bugs...nothing critical.

i got ur solution! Take my old car (again)! I have a 1992 civic coupe. The good - it's red... obviously the best colour! and it's got working AC! It's also got a lot of extra shit in it... extra intake manifolds from random B series motors, a couple of old jacks that have failed, a few rims... all in all, maybe about $60 worth of scrap metal! Oh, and an old portable AC unit from the nineteen eighties! Turns on but it's not cold... so just a giant fan i guess...

As for the bad, I've removed the fuel pump (dunno if i put it back... it might be there as i haven't seen it kicking around in my garage), IACV has been removed and cleaned (but of course, not put back), horn has also been removed (and you can't have it as it's in my current civic sedan) and the timing belt... i dunno when that was changed or if it's ever been changed... but with all the things listed above corrected, it runs \:o

oh, and the rear brakes (drums & shoes) probably needs to be replaced as the e-brake lever is just for show at this point in time. You can have all this for $2.

I don't get the whole 'winter beater' concept if it's not reliable... I'd need minimum: set of winter rubber, working AC / defrost, heaters, reliability.

Also, not saying the fiancé's a gold digger, but really ? You wanna drive in the beater months in a shitbox? (Yes, I know you're using the Civic as a contractor car, hauling dirt 'n shit)

Vas, time to move on bro. Every car I've ditched had a major-ish failure and combined with lots of little nagging shit that just put me over the edge. Lots of EKs out there, stick with your proven formula.

The '99-'00 have always carried a premium over the '96-'98 cars. Not sure why, it's just a facelift.

Time to jump ship to that Accord instead.

Get rid of the ratty old Civic and the Bimmer. But a later model fun-to-drive, reliable, easy to fix, fuel effecient, year-round car like an 06-08 Civic Si.

Uranus

i didnt say $5k for an EK...i said at least $5k, as in a general car (obviously hopefully spening more would net him something better). otherwise, you can get a plain old ek for $3000-4000 yes. (over $3500 to much tho)

I don't see the car in your link, just takes me to all civic ads.

Anyway I went to look at a few tonight and shit is changing my mind, just like the last time I was thinking of replacing the civic. Looked at an SI coupe (2000) and a sedan (1999) they were both in shit shape.

So then I think to myself, why not just fix the civic...fucking same old story i don't know. OR go and buy a 2004 Neon for like 1400 and drive that, those are pretty damn bulletproof, sure no honda badge, but from two buddies who use them and swear by them (both honda guys) it seems like you can't go wrong with later model neons.

It's a fuckery of a situation, i don't really care what I drive as long as it's reliable, i know if i spend a day with my current civic and $300 she will be mint, but will she? This is fuck, it's like I can't break up with this bitch, but then again maybe i am expecting far too much car from the ones I am looking at.

I wish they had the 97+ teg 4 doors here with the updated bumBers (Jeffo), better towing cars, frameless windows (love them).

Let's discuss here, what the fuck should I do, i really need to get my head straight on this.

OBJECTIVE: reliable auto 4 cylinder 4 door car. I will be towing light shit with it (1000 lbs), and will use it daily. I don't want much in the way of rust and want to make sure i can get to work without having to swap motors on the shoulder of the 407. Ideally a honda would be my number one choice because i know them in and out and i really appreciate the engineering and design behind them. toyota can't match them IMO in terms of how well they are put together and how easy they are to diagnose and fix.

your buddies are right, 2004 is one of the best year for the neons and the tranny is decent - as long as the tranny has been serviced regularly! It can be temperamental if the service has not been up to date.

If you see a neon that has a 3 speed, avoid it, you want a 4 speed neon tranny. HUGE difference between those 2 trannies as far as reliability goes.

Where's the oil leak from on your civic? I recall you changing the oil pan gasket when you did the tranny swap. You spent a pretty penny to keep that car running. Personally, I'd mcgyver the civic and stop the water leaks coming in and drive it till spring to get the moneys worth out of it.

Got caught up on my basement renos, today was a productive day so i treated myself by pulling the civic in the garage over a few beers and trying to figure out what the fuck is going on.

Leak into pass side footwell has been fixed, since the car hasn't had a fender liner for years an area had rusted and water got in there. That's getting siliconed.

Overheating, I noticed I was never turning the rad cap all the way so the rad probably wasn't holding enough pressure when at normal operating temp. Easy fix, tighten cap harder as I got anther 1/8th of a turn for it to fully "lock"

Oil leak, it seems to be the oil pan, I dropped it, going to get a new gasket again and will go crazy with the high heat sealer this time. Surprised it would leak though, I replaced the gasket with an OEM honda one not that long ago. The only thing I can think of is because i am using 5w - 30 and it was a hot summer so the oil found it's way out. If i used 10w - 30 then it would've been ok. Regardless I am changing it.

Those three things should be enough to keep me going for a while I hope \:\)
