$178 including gas and insurance? WTF. How is that possible? My insurance is like $180, gas is like $400 and car payment on top of that.
But what is 11% salary? If its like 10k, then 45% on $178 isn't much.

I dont have car payments. I loathe them and the cars depreciate too quickly so I dont see the point in having a new car and be trapped for paying monthly payments on a car for 5 years. I havent had a car payment in 7 years and I intend on keeping it that way.
Plus my current commute is a total of 14km each way and I drive a 03 honda civic which gives me close to 600 to 650 km a tank since I use the highway to commute and my work is right off the highway.
11% is 11% which I wont reveal my current salary lol.

broken down weekly since I have my car payment done weekly... $46 for insurance $78 for car payment $20 for 407 (per week approx) approx 1.25 tanks of gas per week, so $60. maint. on the car, last year I spent about $700 total for the year on oil changes and new front brakes pads & rotors, sticker, new plates .
204 bucks a week?

You can't count the car payment, and insurance as part of the calculation, its a sunk cost. The only costs directly attributable are 1. Gas 2. Mileage.
the majority of the folks who utilize their cars as a higher percentage for commuting. One of my buddy commutes 120km a day and that's 31,200 km a year for commuting alone.

Insurance = $90 Gas = $180 (for work alone) 407 = $90
Of that insurance cost though only 50% should be attributed to work, so let's say $50
So for work alone it's $320/month. Not including the wear and tear on the car (it's a civic and it costs nothing to maintain). No payments on it.
I will be cutting out 407 soon though, so that should save me some change.

I got a job offer elsewhere and that would bring a 45% increase on the commute cost per month and the pay is only 11% more in salary and I think I'll just turn that down.
Don't always look at a job in costs/pay look at where it can get you in the future (even 5+ years out)

What's a "sunk cost" ?
I don't understand how the car payment can't be used to compute commute costs when a car payment is tax deduction when you use the car for business. Same goes for fuel and parking.
I think the cost of the car should be considered as part of your commute cost because adding kms during commuting devalues you car.

it's the same job I do now which is to run a brand spanking new press that's being installed right now and won't be operational till end of jan or beginning of feb.
2011 41" sheet size press w/ all the bells and whistles 6 color with dual coaters and UV dryers vs a 2004 40" sheet size press that's got a fair bit of mechanical issues and still runs well but still got issues.
I like my week off + my commute which is making it hard for me to decide if I should take the job or not.

He is busting economics 101 on y0 ass.
The car payment should be considered, you are right, but you have to take into account the salvage value of the vehicle once sold, etc to get the *true* cost each month. With a lease it would be easier to calculate.

You do realize that a car payment is only a tax deduction for the self-employed right?
With that said - here's my breakdown per month for our household (3 of us car pool together):
$107 - Metropass $300 - gas (probably closer to $350 now w/ current gas prices) $150(?) - insurance on the x3 (when looking at the cost breakdown on my policy) $25 - monthly parking
so that's $582 per month for 3 people -- 80 km a day (my going to work route is longer than coming home because i don't have to pick up my kid from school)
according to CSI standards that's 0.000000000000001% of my salary LOL -- yeah right.

depends on the definition of commute cost. To me, its just my cost to own and operate a vehicle which gets me to work.
I think what wayne is saying is, regardless of how much you use your car, the car payment is something that you will pay regardless of the job location? So when comparing 2 job locations and added cost, you should only compare the parts that actually change.
I'm in a similar situation, there's potentially a job for me back out in r.hill, pay increase is about 10-12%, but then i'd have to use the 407 a lot more, and use a bit more gas.
Ahhh... that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

I think you know exactly what he is saying and you're in the mood to be difficult. Or I'm just cranky, but I think it's #1. Mr. Entrepeneur here talking like noone here has a regular job with a T4. Oh, and he said mileage, which is depreciation and wear and tear. These do not equal the payment.
Sounds like #2... you're cranky today.

you should factor in wear and tear on your shoes and jacket? and the added cost of food to give you the extra energy to walk the extra distance (vs ppl who just drive to office)?
