So it has been just over 4wks now since my car was a$$ raped on the 401 by a transport..

While it majorly bites to not have wheels right now, I have been managing fine without.

So I wanna know.. could you survive without yer ride?????

Absolutely. I have a company work truck that I drive everywhere. My truck just sits in my driveway, i'll use it maybe once or twice a month.

If my car got totaled I'd drive my truck.

No biggie.

Technically yes, but I'd rather drive a rusted out hyundai pony before taking the bus.

Wife is taking the car, I'm left to the ttc bus and it blows. Twice as long to commute then driving, the seats are for skinny midgets, it's packed both ways, there is always one weird person sitting near me, pants get dirty from the grime/dirt, freezing waiting for the bus and half the ride down.

I wouldn't be able to go to work, I can't even imagine how long or if it's even possible to get to my work from my place via public transit. I'd assume it's at least 2 hours each way MINIMUM.

Having said that, if the civic fucks up I'd take the M3 and buy another 1k civic with the quickness before I took fucking public transit. FUCK that, just like astroboy, i'd rather drive an EF hatch with purple tint, rotted to shit and falling apart with 500,xxx km+ and open header while sitting on a milk crate before i took a fucking bus to work.

Speaking of which, this car is the perfect candidate. This guy kept looking at me when I was driving to work one day so I took a pic of him.

If it was just me - sure, I can always work from home; and the closest grocery store is about a 20-30 min. walk.

But w/ my wife and kid - no -- a car is a must; no way in hell I can take public transit just to get my kid to school / pick her up (and cabbing it is just too expensive)

OP: Don't you have a rental car allowance w/ your insurance policy? Seeing how you said your commute was 200+ km a day in the other thread, it sounds like you're pretty car dependent?

Yes.. was pretty car dependant considering it was a commute for college... but I was hit "fortunately" (i guess you could say) the very last week/ my final exams of 4th semester..(still have this month, but at least I don't have class every day)

Thankfully I have great friends/family that one way or another have managed to get me to where I need to be... (and I can use hubby's truck generally through day since he works straight midnights)

I do have rental coverage.. but get this.. I was hit prior to the xmas rush... all rentals in a 200km radius were "sold out!!!!" until Jan 3rd.. was put on a 2 week waiting list.. so I decided to not even bother..

I am banking my payout funds right now, no longer have a car payment or insurance cost which is to my advantage at this time, seeing that just hubby is working at this point..
I cannot professionally start at my new career for several months seeing that the provincial boards are not until May.. .so I will just get whatever work I can in the meantime, save for the board exams then worry about a vehicle then...

Hmmm....you may look to have your name added on to your parent's policy in the short term as they'll rate you a higher rate group because you have a gap of coverage.

my insurance is on "suspension" for the time being.. to allow for time to find a vehicle without having to pay for coverage

How long does that last for? I don't think forever but I guess since u are female, probably older then 25, you are probably ok. Didn't know your A/S so just throwing it out there in case.

As for my policy, I used to pay $800 a year for my Civic even while under 25 before I changed companies in the summer.

I could do with one with ease. In the condo I could have given it up but life isn't always about money in the bank.

I was thinking the same thing.. not certain how long they can leave one on "suspension" but the insurance company knows I am anal as f@ck when it comes to my rides... so no surprise to them it is going to take me some "time" to find something to my liking

fuck the insurance companies, that's all I have to say.

as for not having a car, I NEED a car to get to and from work. I dont think there's public transit that goes into the area where I work at and even if there is, I'd have to walk at least a good 40 minutes to get there. Do more walking and be on my feet some more before starting 12 hour shifts on my feet isnt gonna thrill me. But now you've gotten me curious, I will have to check out the bus schedule in the area and see if there are any services to get me there before 7pm and leaves after 7am but I doubt it.

well, if I didn't have a car, I'd probably have enough to rent a crappy apartment near my work.... so I "could"..

Auto insurance is regulated. I've read through the OAP 1 and I can't recall there were any conditions that would allow this for a long period of time. It is probably safe to assume around 30 days and probably the same insurance company. You may want to talk to your broker to see (and get it in writing if possible). The last thing you want to hear is "don't worry" and next thing you know, your insurance is going to cost you a few hundred more a year because you don't have continuous insurance record.

public transportation...

i curse the bloody bus stop sign that is on the pole beside my driveway...
( i guess good for me if i ever need to take the bus, it is right there) but some ppl can be so ignorant, they sit or stand in the middle of the driveway and then they look at you like you have caused them a huge imposition when trying to leave or enter your own bloody driveway...

I mean come on... the sign is not literally on my driveway...(5ft to the side to be precise).. so wtf is with the dirty looks... ????

You can do a suspension, I've done that before on my motorcycle for 3 months and it counted as continous coverage (State farm). Shouldn't you know this stuff if you work in the industry?

Take it easy son. I am not an expert in all insurance coverages and I don't claim to know it all. All I am saying the OP should look into something just in case. I am not going to say something I am not 100% sure about.

You are an accountant right? Do you know every detail of all aspects of personal, corporate tax along with all the regulations of the CRA? Its the same thing with insurance.

I've commuted to work on the buses and it wasn't too bad. Groceries and stuff are close enough to walk or cycle so yeah, I think I could do it. But I would totally hate it in the winter.
