After getting back from Hawaii my clutch doesn't feel the same. It's very loose at the top and I have to press it all the way down to the floor to have it shift fairly smooth/disengage.
Is there anything I can visually check (fluid level) without jacking up the car?
Or do I need a new clutch? \:\(
My e-brake doesn't seem to holding my car back when applied on a slight hill. I have to really yank on it to hold. These past months I've been just leaving it in gear while I park. I've noticed too that in the past winter that it has seized on me because normally when you release it there's tension in the handle but when I did it was still very loose. Also when in neutral after having released the brake it doesn't roll back. It just sits there like it's still engaged.

Yep, had the same problem. You need a new clutch.

If you have a civic it's a dry clutch not a wet clutch. You can try adding clutch fluid but adding more fluid is not going to help it disengage any better.

You might need a handbrake adjustment, get a brake maintenance in the meantime.

Im in the same boat.. mines a 98 with 175k.

Clutch doesnt feel solid... and I get a bit of chatter if I have a second heavy person in the car.

I need to get it done, but I'm holding out as my girlfriends tranny is starting to slip a bit in first.. that might need to be fixed first \:\(

if you know people, it'd prolly cost 300 to 400 bucks to change a clutch.

buy a new clutch and do it yourself. parts are cheap and its not hard.

and for one thing..you should be pushing the clutch to the floor regardless.

ok, what you can do to see if the clutch is going:

at a slow speed, stick it in 4th, and floor the gas. if your RPM's go up but your speed doesn't, then your clutch is slipping. grab a clutch off of ebay, an exeddy stock replacement clutch is $110 shipped to your door, and you can find really cheap clutch/flywheel combo's on ebay for a nice price. i've never seen a shop locally that sells clutches and flywheels for the price that's on ebay. if you find a good priced clutch/flywheel combo then just opt for the new flywheel, it'll end up costing as much as it would to get your current flywheel machined (which you should do...if you want to do it properly)

as for the e-brake, i can tell you now that it sounds like your rear brake caliper is seized. it's typical on hondas. there's a place on midwest road near kennedy/ellesmere called "midwest caliper" you can buy a re-built caliper that looks brand new (all new seals and shit) for $95. a bunch of people i know and myself have gotten calipers from there and they are really good quality. under your arm rest, you pop that cover off and you can adjust the tension for the e-brake cable. swap the caliper and tighten this cable and it'll be good as new.

save yourself some money and do the labour yourself if your able too, the caliper is an simple job, the clutch a bit more complicated but nothing you can't do at home with a wratchet set from canadian tire, but you will need a 12pt socket (12mm or 10mm i think) for the flywheel bolts and a torque wrench.

Thanks Flexin.

A new car "might" be in the works, possibly next year (09/10 Mazda 6 or 3 hatch). That's why I don't really want to dump $$ into this one but I need it to get me around. I think I can survivie without the e-brake by always parking it in gear. But the clutch thing is more "serious". Oh also don't want to get stuck n the snow, so snow tires are needed too as per my other thread.

Did the 4th gear pull test as suggested by Flexin and it held still. No rpm slippage.

I checked ebay for the Exedy clutch/flywheel combo and the cheapest was $169+$35 (shipping UPS/USPS)USD. Is that a good price?

I looked at the reservoirs earlier and I saw that two of them said something like brake fluid. Is that what's used for the clutch? If so, what weight?
