Well Im new to this site but definitly not new to Honda. My last car was an ls vtec hatchback civic that got stolen =(. well, the bubble required 93 octane because I had alot of goodies under the hood and because the motor was high compression.

Right now I have my new 2000 si coupe, bone stock motor, just exhaust and headers. Can I use reg. 89 octane gas? Will this affect the car in any negative way?

Thanks everyone

Yes, Honda states in the manual to use 91.

Using 94 isn't needed. Unless you're running a CR higher than 12:1 you're throwing your money away.

I always get the highest Octane available at the pump, don't go less than 91.

If the manual says to use premium, then absolutely use that. If it didn't require it, I would use the cheap stuff myself.

91 or up. If its bone stock there's really no need to spend extra money on anything above 91 though (if available). It wont make ur car faster and 91 is not going to cause detonation problems.

for those of us in CA & some other states 91 is the best we can get at the pump. And our cars still run fine, even with mods & moderate CR increases, as long as its tuned properly.

Great thread! I was going to ask the same question. Some clown plowed into my Mustang last week and its totaled, I'm pretty pissed off about that. Been sporting my sisters Si (2000, a nice blue color) ... anyways she told me to run 87 in it, I did not think that was a good idea (I was just quessing the si is a high compression motor requiring greater then 87 octane)... She's got some mods on this thing, an AEM intake, timing gears (or something like that ... she changed some pullies under the timing cover), a header and cat back, and some computer thingy in the glove box that shows the RPM digitally and has a ligt that comes on if you rev it up to 4500rpm or higher (I have no idea what it is, guessing its some kind of engine controller), and other stuff i do not know about probably (my stang... was still quicker \:\) ) ...Anyways, I've been running 93 in it, it seems to run better w/ it.... I'm guessing that's a good idea, or could that controller thingy be allowing the use of 87 somehow? BTW, I am not (was not) a Honda fan, but this si is a sweet ride, it really is.

Look in your owners manual, page 180 and it will explain everything you need to know, but to make things simpler....91 and higher aka premium unleaded gas...

its funny though, you will find since the si came out there really hasnt been one owners manual that says to get anything less than premium unleaded gas... ie 91 in cali...

just something for everyone to think about....
