ok guys i need some opinons

to start my car: a 99 civic ex sohc non vtec, it has exhaust intake, lowering springs and rims, and a cf hood so basically stock

so what i need to know is whould it be smarter for me to build a custom set-up or should i try and find a complete kit(if so what do you recommend)
obviously the cheaper it is the better i will be but i dont want it to be cheap in quality
i only plan to run on a small amount of boost if i do decide to get a turbo and if i can get the money up for it over the summer
if i buy a full kit am i going to need to buy a piggy back unit for my ecu?

one last thing is how much should i exprect to spend on this bad boy?

if i am forgeting anything i will need to know about this plz add it in ur reply

thanks a bunch guys i need your help and hope i came to the right place
mark.

dude if you're car is an ex it has a 1.6l d16y8 sohc vtec engine. I suggest you learn a lot more about cars and this subject in general before asking again... Just read read read. Specifically the FAQ thread and search for anything else...

Welcome.

I had a 1996 Civic with the D16Y8 SOHC and had a GReddy turbo kit (TD-04 turbo) and an old school Apex-I Super AFC and it worked well.

I would look to GReddy for a full kit if you are not comfortable with sourcing all the parts yourself. You will pay more for a complete kit but you are paying for convenience. I don't know how much the kits go for these days.

My friend had a Jackson Racing Supercharger on his D16Y8 and it was SLOW. I would not recommend going the supercharger route with a single cam engine.

I would go with a Hondata S200 for engine management, but you could get away with what is already supplied with a complete turbo kit.

I would do what EnigneN009 said, cause that's what I did READ. I have a 97 ex and had threw a rod and was going the cheapest route and was going to put back the SOHC motor but decided on putting a B16 in. Just sit back and read for a while. You will be amazed how much you will learn in just a couple months if you what to learn it.

firstly don't waste your money on hondata please!
i regret investing so much money in such a pile of dogshit every day that i drive. i should have just stuck to my guns and went with uberdata originally and i wouldn't be having such angst towards hondata as a company and as a tuning 'solution'.

secondly, read the damn FAQ! and the owners manual of your car...

well if that's what happened you got fucked over. and i highly doubt he blew the d16y8 motor. the thing is basically bullet proof unless u don't change the oil and don't take care of it. and no you don't know what you're talking about because you're coming here for help on boost when know you jack shit. so sorry noob, the answer remains the same, learn more about cars first. also post a picture of your engine bay for shits and giggles.

if you dont anything about motors of FI period then get a kit. If you know what you need, then search around piece by piece and do a custom one. Alot cheaper for the same results.

Read, Read then Read some more. Helps so much. You seem like you are on the right track, asking questions.

Few sites.

obviously here.
Honda-tech.com
homemadeturbo.com
turbod16.com

That should get you started, hang out there....ask some questions.....you will be amazed what you will pick up in just a month or so....

Good luck....

i believe it's lower. Somewhere around 4800 to 5000 due to the lower redline at about 6800-7200 (i hit the rev limiter at 6800 on my y7 motor and that's measured using an autometer tach, not the pos oem tach which can be about 200+ rpm off). the sohc vtec isn't as noticeable but it gives you about 22 more hp over a non-vtec model.

By the time you fell like you know what to do and what you want, your set-up is going to be a whole lot different. Hell I've done changed set-ups about 2-3 times now. I was going to go with a inline pro mani and now I'm gonna have TurboCharged make one, I've changed the turbos I was going to use from a GT32/55 to a SC34. Hell now I'm even thinking of dropping the boost idea and doing a K20 DC5 typppppe aaar swap

and join the thousands of others who've done the exact same thing before you. I say do a sohc custom turbo kit and put out about 250hp on the stock block instead of swapping.
