anybody? I've been starting some threads in Out There! regarding bikes...I'm a n00b and seeking my first purchase. I'm going back and forth on new vs used.

I know I'm supposed to post in the for sale/wanted thread, but who looks there? (it should be removed and so we can start over btw!).

Anyone locally looking to sell their ride? I was thinking about an SV650S, YZF600 or ZZR600 whether new or used.

I have about $2k as a budget for either an older used sportbike or to put down as a downpayment on a new one.

Advice? Thoughts?

I'm selling mines but its probably over your budget. As for your first bike, I recommend getting a used one. I know some people who purchased their bike brand spanking new and dropped it right off the bat. Start out with something small but no bigger then a 600. As for used bikes, attention to detail, the seller could easily replace the fairings without even you knowing. Sit on the bike and get a "feel" of it to see if you like it. It would be nice if the seller has a record of whats done to it. The previous owner of my bike had everything(reciepts, service records, and parts) even down to the frame sliders installed at the dealership . I was pretty much sold after that.

BTW, do you work for an insurance company? or was it someone else? I plan to change my motorcycle insurance as soon its expires in a couple of months (If i stil have it around that is)

USED!!! i picked mine up used for good deal.

Good choices of bikes. I know you're responsible and will be fine with a 600. Forget what those fools in OT say. It's been a while since i've seen you, but you're not a light weight guy like me (i don't remember you being big either, but you're not a featherweight like me which a 200 is fine) in which brings up my point that yes 200's are great beginner bikes but they are slow due to power/weight ratio. You're staying in the medium powered 600's which is not bad at all. I almost wish I went that route because the R6 is too much for me.

When you find a bike you can generally figure how well or abused it was with the owner. You buy from some young kid, and you can probably bet he used it to show off and probably didn't maintain it much. When I got mine I got lucky, he was a late 20's early 30's adult. He was having a kid soon and realized he wasn't going to be riding much so he sold his barely used bike (1k miles and under a year old). Those are the guys you want to buy from.

Have you budgeted gear too? I've spent about $1000 on gear and still need more (looking for pants). Given half that budget was my helmet, which isn't necessary for the top line models (top line models offer more comfort, not more safety. So spending more doesn't mean you're any more safer).

And State Farms is by far the best. Especially with having cars under them too. They let me have full coverage on the bike for just about $300 a year. That's a crazy deal.

Oh yeah if you can wait.. you can find bikes cheaper durring late fall/winter season.

I spent more on my gear than my 1st bike. You can get a used ninja 500 cheap. people seem to hold onto their sv650's I don't see that many used.

well i'm a little displaced in san diego but i suggest buying used. even try a 250 for a few months. i started on a 250 for about 6 months then moved up to an R6. i'm selling the R6 now and looking for a 600rr. no regrets on bike choices. you can get a 250 for 1500 or less, but if you want a 600 you're probably looking at 3000 for a '94-ish cbr600, 4k+ for a '99+ bike and 5k+ for an '03+ bike.

oh and for insurance, i found the best for full coverage was state farm. they go on engine size, not bike type. so any 600cc is the same to them. i pay $800 a year for full coverage. progressive and foremost (when i had you quote them for my r6) were a few thousand. but i'm 22, so it'll be different for you.

damn 200 through geico? It must be age because geico wanted close to $2000 for me. State farms I'm happy $240 full year full coverage (and thats under the higher $250,000/$500,000 liability)

Does anyone have a used 2006+ Suzuki GSXR 600 for sale? I too am looking to get my first bike. I have not ridden a bike before (taking MSF in a few weeks) but the GSXR is the only bike that fits me. I am short 5'8"

don't get a new(er) bike as a first bike. you WILL drop it. it is just a matter of when, and how fast you will be going (and 0mph still does damage). get something you don't have to freak out when your $7000 adds another $1000 for new fairings and repairs. also, that shit will get stolen pretty quick unless you keep watch over it constantly.

I'm 5'8" as well. If you can get over having only 1 foot down you'll find you can ride a lot more. Remember your only gonna be stopped a small percentage of the time. I suggest getting a used ninja 500 or a sv650

wow.. you're 5'8" and can't that well on a bike? I'm only 5'6" and the R6 was the only comfortable bike for me. Yes I tip tow a slight bit but it was the only bike that I was able to at least get two feet to touch down. Originally I wanted a 600RR but sat on it at the show and it was not comfortable standing. This is what suprises me that you can only fit a GSXR.

And I agree with Ryan... first bike = used bike.

Well I was the dealership and the guy told me to hop on both the GSXR600 and R6. I could not even touch the floor with my toes on the R6. I have very short legs and a larger upper body.

I tested back in '05 so it would be improper to comment on the '06+ bikes.

do not buy a new bike !! the value drop so fast its not even funny.

for a noobie bike i would search for fzr600 under 2k... or cbr f2..under 2k... buy if ur budget is a little higher i would save up for a sv650.. fun bike =]..!

or if u really really need to finiance a new noobie bike.. i would try the new ninja 250 =]!! go test ride it tommorow at the san mateo show!!!
