I'm selling mines but its probably over your budget. As for your first bike, I recommend getting a used one. I know some people who purchased their bike brand spanking new and dropped it right off the bat. Start out with something small but no bigger then a 600. As for used bikes, attention to detail, the seller could easily replace the fairings without even you knowing. Sit on the bike and get a "feel" of it to see if you like it. It would be nice if the seller has a record of whats done to it. The previous owner of my bike had everything(reciepts, service records, and parts) even down to the frame sliders installed at the dealership . I was pretty much sold after that.
BTW, do you work for an insurance company? or was it someone else? I plan to change my motorcycle insurance as soon its expires in a couple of months (If i stil have it around that is)

well i'm a little displaced in san diego but i suggest buying used. even try a 250 for a few months. i started on a 250 for about 6 months then moved up to an R6. i'm selling the R6 now and looking for a 600rr. no regrets on bike choices. you can get a 250 for 1500 or less, but if you want a 600 you're probably looking at 3000 for a '94-ish cbr600, 4k+ for a '99+ bike and 5k+ for an '03+ bike.
oh and for insurance, i found the best for full coverage was state farm. they go on engine size, not bike type. so any 600cc is the same to them. i pay $800 a year for full coverage. progressive and foremost (when i had you quote them for my r6) were a few thousand. but i'm 22, so it'll be different for you.

don't get a new(er) bike as a first bike. you WILL drop it. it is just a matter of when, and how fast you will be going (and 0mph still does damage). get something you don't have to freak out when your $7000 adds another $1000 for new fairings and repairs. also, that shit will get stolen pretty quick unless you keep watch over it constantly.

do not buy a new bike !! the value drop so fast its not even funny.
for a noobie bike i would search for fzr600 under 2k... or cbr f2..under 2k... buy if ur budget is a little higher i would save up for a sv650.. fun bike =]..!
or if u really really need to finiance a new noobie bike.. i would try the new ninja 250 =]!! go test ride it tommorow at the san mateo show!!!
